Hi all!

I submitted 34 secondaries this cycle and only received 2 IIs and one post-II R and a waitlist.

The R was from Colorado and the WL was from Mayo AZ--but with the whole Mayo MN bamboozle, it looks like they waitlisted everyone, so I doubt I'll see any movement.

  • GPA: 3.72
  • sGPA: 3.53 (struggled with Orgo I because I took a 5 week condensed version over the summer and got a C)
  • MCAT: 518
  • ORM (Southeast Asian)
  • PA resident
  • Graduated from an old Ivy League school with double major in Nutrition and Public Health
  • 2 time cancer survivor (NHL at 12 y/o and secondary AML at 14 y/o)-wrote about this for my personal statement
  • 400+ hours of pediatric oncology/bone marrow transplant research
    • got one abstract from this -- the cancer space ain't great for pubs at my institution
  • very little clinical experience (because my whole life is a clinical experience lol)
    • edit: 70 hours of shadowing
  • 500+ hours of miscellaneous volunteer work (some cancer, some nutrition in underserved communities, some patient advocacy)
  • President of a vegan group at my school
  • On the board of the student sustainability association
  • Keynote speaker at 3 of my pediatric hospital's events
  • Founder of a start-up to provide student groups with reasonably priced vegan + healthy catering (did the recipe development and food prep myself)

I think I could definitely use some actual "clinical experiences" but it's hard to know what that counts as. I have volunteered in a non-clinic setting with patients and their families for 5 years, but I didn't count that as "clinical" where I know someone in the same role as me did for their app. (edit: I also have a complicated vaccination history where I am unable to receive any because of a bone marrow transplant and subsequent hypogammaglobulinemia aka pre-mature B -cells. so I give myself sub-q immunoglobulin infusions in place of vaccines. this has been a huge barrier to being able to volunteer in a clinic because most HR departments think i'm anti-vax and just don't understand even after I provide doctor's notes)

This year I was clinical research coordinator for an AML lab at a pediatric hospital and I also volunteered weekly at the aforementioned non-clinic place. I was hoping to apply again this coming cycle as to not wait another year. My partner just got into the two highest ranked medical schools in the US so I gotta step it up haha

Thank you so much in advance for those who care to even read this <3 <3

You not having clinical experience killed an otherwise good app.

What was your school list?

oh forgot to mention my school list was wayyy too top heavy. I applied to a lot of CA schools because of my partner who is a CA resident.

You have a good app. You should get in somewhere next round. You shot yourself in the foot by not doing any clinical volunteering and a top heavy school list.

"very little clinical experience (because my whole life is a clinical experience lol)" is real weak.

Thank you! And I figured as much when all the Rs came.

It was your complete lack of shadowing and clinical volunteering that greatly limited your chances for interviews. Before you reapply you should accumulate 50 hours of physician shadowing (including primary care) and 200 hours of clinical volunteering with patient contact. After that is done I suggest these schools:
Drexel
Temple
Jefferson
Penn State
Geisinger Commonwealth
Pittsburgh
Rochester
Vermont
Quinnipiac
Boston University
Tufts
Hofstra
Einstein
Mount Sinai
Seton Hall
George Washington
Virginia Commonwealth
Eastern Virginia
NOVA MD
USF Morsani
Miami
Oakland Beaumont
Wayne State
Western Michigan
Medical College Wisconsin
Rosalind Franklin
TCU-UNT
Kaiser
California University
USC Keck

Hi Faha! Thank you! I actually did do 70 hours of shadowing (about 20 hours of primary care). But yes, I do need to add other clinical experiences.

I have friend with 4.0 GPA, 525 score, clinical and non clinical work, etc and he didn't get into any school yet. He is on waitlist for few. Admission to med school is very unpredictable even with high stats. Don't give up your hope. I am positive you will get into med school next year.

Is he ORM or from Cali?
