I found this to be an interesting bit of show biz/medical trivia - the wrist fracture that Comedy Central host Stephen Colbert experienced some months ago was treated by an osteopathic physician: Jerald P. Vizzone, DO, an orthopedic surgeon who practices in Montclair, NJ...I realize that it's kind of old news at this point, but I thought it was worth sharing...

himm, new to me! That's cool. To continue w/ old news... I think Paris Hilton's shrink or doctor who got her out of prison was a DO.

Hahah I love Stephen Colbert ... 'wrist strong.' That's awesome a DO treated his wrist ... I guess if they are good enough for multi-million dollar celebs, they are good enough for pre-meds!!

So what? I'd want my wrist fracture treated by a physician as well.

I know Dr. Vizzone- thats pretty kool.

Best point made. We shouldn't look at DOs doing something as anything different than an MD doing something. X was treated by a DOCTOR. Not MD or DO or anything else!!👍

Wait... A DO can also be a physician?
No, they are Ninjas, duh....

And here that one is resized for someones avatar... I just realized how sweet that picture is... 🙂

Why do people feel compelled to make threads when a D.O. treats someone?

Who cares.

I also read that some DOs celebrate Christmas

DO's killed Jesus. They're just trying to make up for it.

Actually guys, the true American that Stephen Colbert is, he knew that only one medical degree originated from the Great Land of Liberty....and you guess it!...it the DO degree. Colbert was just paying omage to his home country thats all...👍 Come on..the DO was invented by the Great American AT "my homeboy" Still, while some german dude back in the stone ages invented MD...who do you think stephen colbert would go to?...

No Donny. These men are nihilists. There's nothing to be afraid of.

Damn... I'm going to be a Jew DO probably...I'm going to be making up for a lot then. 😛

I do find it interesting when a DO makes it into the mainstream...but that is more because they are still a minority in the medical population. It is the same kind of thing when I meet someone from southern indiana while in europe and go..hey wow. You're from southern indiana. Neat.

All I have to say is...... I'm going to atttend Nova next year, and we have a "mainstreamed" DO..... b/c Nova is the alma mater of the famous Dr. Will Kirby, DO. That's right guys, that dude from Dr. 90210, who was the dermatologist... who (he said so himself) likes to give gay men injections so they have "naughty lips," and cure his friends of genital warts.

Nova wins!!!! 😀 👍😀👍

Not that I respect the narcissistic Kirby, but I hope that's not verbatim; warts are viral and therefore not curable.

You mean "dermatologist"...he is very good at tattoo removal I'm sure. I am not sure whether I'm proud of that. 😉 Go seminoles and nova though. lol

Yah... I said "dematologist" didn't I? And I'm not quite sure if I'm proud of that either....... actually eeeek. I'd rather be attending the alma mater of Dr Robert Rey... in comparison he's much cooler, and has those crazy ass scrubs which show off his bis/tris... only in Hollywood.

It's a nice December day here in Austin to go for a run. 75 degrees and sunny!

We've got great swimming in the Pacific Northwest right now.

So you're a stalker..................

actually, I've had the pleasure of meeting this particular poster at a conference (in person) and he is really a nice guy.

Not everyone with a low post-count is a troll, especially when they post positive information and are not trying to incite rude behavior, unlike other posts I've seen in this thread.

Let's grow up a little guys. Everyone has a little fun with trolls, but make sure they're actually a troll first and let's not turn this thread into something that would rival pre-allo.

pre-DO is where I come for sane pre-med advice and anecdotes and I don't want to see it go down the toilet!

Breaking News:

I've just been informed by reliable sources (e.g, not TexasTriathelete) that DOs in fact treat many people in many cities across the US. :scared: Shocking, no?

Maybe someone should relay that to the media, who tends to portray DOs as witch doctors, or confuses them with MDs.

So you're a stalker..................

Definition:
stalker |ˈstôkər|
noun
a person who stealthily hunts or pursues an animal or another person.
• a person who harasses or persecutes someone with unwanted and obsessive attention.

Am I a stalker? According to the above definition, no.

In regard to my participation in this web-site, I'd say I'm a person probably not so different from all of you, taking pre-med courses, and with an interest in osteopathic medicine.

Being accused by you of being a 'Stalker' sounds offensive. Did you mean to try to offend me?

This is curious to me. I simply offered what I thought might be of some interest to those of us interested in osteopathic medicine.

Sorry if this offended you, smcin001...

In response to 'Yourmother' - "who cares?" Apparently many people 'care' about this info, as evidenced by 444 views and 34 responses. It's just a little bit of light-hearted fare I though some folks might find interesting. I know I did. It's not meant to be earth shattering news...

It's true that there's no such thing as a small ego. We all (myself included) get so 'offended' and feel a need to make snide remarks over such small stuff.

Can't we just have some good-natured sharing without presumptuous judgments being made? It would be good practice, considering the work we'd all like to do...

Thanks for the support megboo! 🙂

Hey bud, you're new 'round these parts so we'll cut you some slack but you HAVE to develop some thick skin STAT or you won't last. No one was being serious and we are much more welcoming than the "40-yr-old virgin" forum.

Nobody better shank him!

or the pre-DO posters could stop being as p!ssy as the Thunderdome posters

pretty sad that a new poster comes with good intentions, doesn't badmouth anyone, praises the DO professions, wants to be a DO, and we STILL gang up on him.

hmmmmm........

DOs are what, 15% of the physician population? More like 3% where I live. I personally am building a toolbox of factoids like the information about Colbert, and I will undoubtedly put this one to use. The majority of my friends and family members so far have looked at me funny and said "isn't a DO a chiropractor/podiatrist/optometrist, and why would you give up on med school after all your hard work?" Factoids are helpful.

Yea... you need a hug. :biglove:

Most people around here seem to be cynical/sarcastic by nature... so no worries.

And the people that leave rude comments maybe do to the stress of not getting acceptances ? (Forget 'em)

Still stands, no need to get defensive - and I wasn't even one of the potentially "offensive" posters. I still say to lighten up, I don't think those folks were trying to be offensive and I certainly don't think it's a reason for everyone to get so overly defensive, even though I know that's in a certain species' coding, but let's all just relax... before the ownage train departs.

There's always going to be a mix of personalities and quite a bit is lost in translation, if you will.

Shaniqua, carry on with your love wand.

I'm thinking that people are just stressed out and being cynical to relieve some tension.

At least I hope our pre-DO regulars aren't turning into snotty pre-meds on a full-time basis 🙁

I'm the first to recognize that I get snarky in my posts when I'm stressed.

yeah, it's in the pre-DO/DO from decades of automatic defense.

Why would there be an "ownage" train if someone's not supposed to get defensive? Why even bring it up?

Your logic lies elsewhere. Let's not nitpick 'figures of speech'. Afterall, we are coming from the same side of the fence.
I'm suggesting that we not make matters worse by over-reacting to those posts - I think the OP may have done just that in this instance, hence my tongue in cheek advice...

Shaniqua, spread some love, I say...

No, my logic lies in the fact that someone I know personally, who REALLY wants to be a DO comes here to remind us and inform us of some GOOD public PR (for a change), and some posters acted rude toward him with comments such as "who cares" and "so you're a stalker" and I defended him.

Someone throwing a love smiley or trying to throw "tongue-in-cheek" advice won't stop it from happening again. No one may have intended to be downright mean, but there are better ways to word something to get your idea across than to actually be mean about it.

Obviously I got my point across, so I won't bother with it anymore, unless someone decides to get snarky with me after I post this :meanie:

I see you're point but perhaps you are too "invested" in the OP. Personally, I don't think it works to try to "police" the forum in order to curb personalities - even though you may quite possibly be correct in this situation... some of those remarks could be interpreted as abrasive but I guess I, for one, don't take things that seriously around here and didn't see them as such.

Rest assured, someone will come out of the "snarky" bottoms of SDN momentarily...

Fight the good fight, Meg!

*gasapple bows out*
