How hard is it for this school? At the interview, the students all stated it was tough to do, that you really have to do something above and beyond the norm? For example, the student interviewer told me that he got married, which allowed him to get in state status... can anyone shed some light on possible ways?

lol i recently aquired i have to live at LEAST 12 months and state I want to stay there after I graduate to practice there, hmm

buy a house and pay property taxes to the county and state...if that doesn't get you in-state status, I don't know what will.

It's not as impossible as people make it out to seem...however you have to legit show that you're invested in the state (so sorry to all who are looking for a quick fix). The purpose of residency tuition is to help out Maryland residents. As the only dental school in Maryland, it provides an incentive to those who see a future career in the state.

It's important to start planning now if you want to apply for a residency change. Basically, its a paperwork game--change your license, voting registration, residence, etc. Show everything you can to show you live, work in or give back to the state (include electric bills, phone bills, join a church in the area, etc.). Talk directly to financial aid people, specifically the Registrar. Many people are rejected at first but file an appeal and work at it. Basically, those who work at it can be rewarded, even if rejected at first.

Is it impossible? no..and often those who say it is just haven't put in the grunt work. I would say at least 10 people in my class so far have already been approved.

Just talk to one of your future classmates and see if they'll be willing to enter into a sham marriage for tuition purposes. Quick Vegas trip, save tens of thousands of dollars. You don't actually have to consummate the marriage unless you're just bored.

Or perhaps you can find property to enter into a joint ownership. All the out-of-state students can all co-own one house.
