Hey everybody,

i was hoping some OOS student from either UK or UL might see this. Or I suppose an IS student and have some insight.

In OH it is possible to gain in state tuition and residency status after one year of classes as a medical student. has anyone heard that happening in KY?

UK is the school i want to attend, but the price is outrageous.

Thanks

I don't know about UK but I do know that UofL does not allow a change in residency status. When you accept their offer of acceptance you have to sign a contract agreeing to pay OOS tuition all four years. 🙁 Ridiculous, I know.

OH is one of a minority of states that lets you easily change residency status once enrolled. KY, to my knowledge, is not one of these states.

I looked into this for similar financial reasons. You can't gain residency in Kentucky while you are being educated. You'd have to defer a year, become emancipated from your parents or whatever else is involved, and work/live in KY in order to gain residency.

It's a pity that their OOS tuition is so prohibitive, but I withdrew before interviewing because of this.

If you're into reading the fine print: http://www.lrc.ky.gov/kar/013/002/045.htm

Marriage to a KY resident can also allow you to switch residency (contigent upon on other factors, but marriage proves you're there for reasons other than education).

Edit: I don't know if that holds true at UofL since they require to sign an agreement, but from my understanding it's true at UK after talking to an OOS student who had done so.
