It seems as if everyone with a gap year works as a scribe or in research but I would prefer to work as a tutor or something else. How much would not working as a scribe or in research affect my application?

Scribe = clinical experience
Research = research experience
These are typical components of the application that students try to beef up. Tutoring doesn't feed into them, so is less popular. But if you like it and it's meaningful to you then do it. You can always write about it as one of your most meaningful ECs and reflect on what you learned/how it influenced you. Maybe consider teaching as well

If I were to continue to gain clinical experience by volunteering and I have some research experience would scribing or researching be necessary? Thanks for the reply

I would think not. I don't know if research is ever 'necessary.' I even know students at top schools that have none at all (though a few are D1 athletes so grain of salt). Honestly, I would just do things that you're really passionate about. In the past I did activities that people suggested to enhance my app that I didn't really care about or learn from, and now I'm not even putting them on my app.

But yeah do clinical volunteering. Do the research if you are excited about it.

I have a buddy that worked as a high school teacher in low income/low resource public school system, two others that worked for a giant company that runs pharm trials. You can do other things, scribing and research are just very popular.
