My ideal goal is to get into med school, but I need a gap year or two to fix my flaws. First off, I have not made worthwhile relationships with my professors; I will be working extremely hard my senior year to build up my letters of recommendation.

Secondly, I need to show that I am capable of doing well in harder courses since I haven't been able to really show this in my previous years. I could have done better in these classes, but my priorities were not in line with my goal to get into med school. Not only am I a student athlete, but I am also someone that has liked to go out on the weekends in the past.

Finally, I need to build up my extracurriculars.

This coming year, I am really buckling down and focusing on what is important for my future.

Right now, my science and overall GPA is about 3.50, and I plan on taking the MCAT either in January or in the spring after I have taken my first semester classes.

I am unsure of what would be best suited for my time after I graduate. I was thinking of taking an accelerated EMT course over the summer and then volunteering/working if I would have time. However, I think that grad school will probably be best suited for my future whether I get accepted into med school or not. I am very strong in math, and I have found genetics, analytical chemistry, and organic chemistry very interesting. Medical administration is appealing to me, but I have not taken any business classes except for statistics. If I don't get into med school, I would like to be in a career where I am always around and interacting with people.

I really need help to determine what would be best for me. What options do I have that would help my application the most to get into med school? Additionally, what other career paths should I look into? Looking forward to hearing from you!

Why are you trying to get into med school? Perhaps I misunderstood you but you said you think grad school is "best suited to your future". Why not focus on getting into grad school instead of med school then?

Med school is what I ideally want to do, but I would like to have other options if it doesn't work out. In my opinion, I think that grad school would be best for my time off, but I would like to hear different opinions.

I spoke to a pre-health advisor today, and I asked her about gap year suggestions, and she literally said anything is viable as long as it shows you are serving others and committed to the medical field. She said working 40 hours a week at Starbucks to earn money and spending remaining time working at a free clinic is perfectly acceptable. "As long as you are not just lying on some beach."
