Hi,

Long story short I'm graduating this year and received a couple post interview rejections from Canadian schools.

Based on my interview performances, I need to work on my interviewing skills and likely lacked the maturity and life experiences that these programs were looking for. I'm comfortable with my stats, and likely won't be doing any more academic related stuff in my gap year (other than MAYBE taking the Canadian DAT to expand options and maybe taking a couple prereqs). I currently only have an American DAT score which limited my options of canadian schools to apply to.

Canadian schools are a bit different in that your resume doesn't matter as much to get to the interview stage (where as I hear It's very important in the states). Therefore despite getting to the interview stage, my extracurriculars are certainly weak and I'm struggling finding things to do in this gap year.

Does anyone have any suggestions/tips/advice?

Thank you!

The last thing the admission committee wants to see you do during your gap year is nothing.
Definitely work on your interviewing skills, but look into more volunteering and shadowing opportunities during your gap year. Consider finding a job too. While you did mentioned that you preferred not to take any additional courses, I think dental schools would love to see prospective students taking a couple high level science courses if there's time and money for it.

Assuming you're a Canadian, why did you take the American DAT? (Or are you an American trying for Canadian schools?)

Best of luck~

I have no idea how dental assisting works in Canada, but have you looked into that, or another dental-related job? It shows commitment to the field and is great exposure for when you are actually in dental school. I would suggest that, shadowing, and volunteering.

Whatever you do, make sure you do something with your gap year. It won't show the admissions committee maturity if you clown around on a gap year.
