I'm looking for ways to spend my gap year, including volunteering programs, etc. but curious whether moving somewhere for a better part of the year will affect my state of residency. I know there's specific guidelines for each state, but in general, would I be able to apply next June and not be affected by my plans for afterwards? I will definitely still be here when submitting the primary app.

Probably just keep your voter registration where you want your residency to be and don't try to formally move your mailing address

Be sure to remain a dependent on your parents taxes. To get an II/acceptance you just need to show voters registration and driver license, but to get IS tuition you need to actually be living in the state or dependent on someone who is. Schools, at least where I'm from, are a lot more stingy about IS tuition than IS/OOS acceptance.

I moved to Boston for my 1 year SMP and am still a NY resident (moved back)
