hi guys
i was just wondering abt the salaries and lifestyle in gastro and cardiology..
i have heard that gastro nowadays is considered equal to or even better than cards...can a gastro doc make 700k or more like an interventional card...is gastro as tough as cardio as far as the working hours are concerned

Although there's been a lot of threads discussing the difficult lifestyle of cards, i think what kind of practice setting you work in plays a large role in determining your lifestyle. For instance, a non-interventional cardiologist in a large group can pretty much work 8-5 with call maybe once a week or less. Call for even an interventional cardiologist can be limited in a large group setting. With the advent of hospitalists, you wouldnt have to go into the ER at night if all your patient needs is basic IM stuff.
Significant GI bleeds are fairly common and so even a GI doc will have to come in to the hospital pretty routinely at night when on call.
On average though, I think GI and cards require the most work and pay the most of the IM fields. The average cardiologist probably works a little harder and makes more than the average GI doc (both fields can be pretty lucrative if you practice in the right setting)...to make $700,000 in any of the fields would require a combination of hard work and solid business sense.
My feeling is its best to pick your field based on your interest...you can find the practice setting that fits your lifestyle and income goals in any of these 2 fields.
