An ionic solid gave a blue color. Which solid is most likely?
a. BaSO4
b. AgCl
c. CuSO4
d. KI
e. Li2SO4

Between the two transition metals listed, b and c, the solution just says "color is associated with transition metals. choice C, supper (II) sulfate gives a blue color". Why is it not AgCl given that reasoning?
 
Copper specifically gives aqueous blue solutions; he fails to mention that (Dr. Romano). Thats one of the things copper is known for, reflecting blue light.
 
Copper gives off a blue color.

Silver does not give off any color in a flame test, and neither does gold. They both require far more excitement.

I would just memorize the basic ones:

calcium, lithium, strontium = red

sodium = yellow

arsenic, copper = blue

potassium, rubidium, cesium = violet (or purple, they are the last 3 alkaline metals)

boron, phosphate, barium, zinc = green (categorize these as the random ones = green)

thank you both. in your experience, would you say this is a viable question on the actual DAT?
 
Viable, yes, but I think they'd only give you ONE compound with a transition metal and the rest be blatantly wrong. I don't think it's worth the time to memorize all of the ions and their colors.
