In dealing with solubility and acid/nase this calculation comes up fairly often. May seem simple to some but I would love to know a trick on how to compute this 1.7 * 10^-10 = x^2 . In otherwords how do you square or even cube root a number given in scientific notation. another ex. 2.1 * 10^-6 = 4x^3 ???

1.7*10^-10 is the same as 170 * 10^-12. You know 13^2 is 169 and (10^-6)^2 = 10^-12 so your answer is 13*10^-6 which equals 1.3*10^-5. It's a close estimate.

The cube root one - it might help you to memorize the first couple cube roots. I have to go to class now so I can't do it atm.

8 to the 3rd is almost 500, so you could use that.

Crazy how they'd expect you to know that.

If I'm wrong someone clear it up.
