Before I begin medical school (DO school in NY) in 1 month, I would just like to clarify a few things.

My goal is to match a residency in Buffalo, NY. Doesn't matter which hospital (any recommendations?) as I would like to be close to the border. I realize Buffalo isn't the most popular location for graduates, so I am assuming this can work in my favour.
(Source: First Year Residents - Dept of Medicine, Jacobs SMBS - University at Buffalo) This list has a lot of Carib grads.

1. To match here, would it be ideal to complete rotations at several Buffalo hospitals? How do you go about setting these up to ensure you get them?
2. Do program directors look at your grades from MS1-MS2 or is it more board scores?
3. What are some things to do during medical school to improve your residency application?
4. Any general advice in trying to get the best possible residency for a DO student would be great.

Thank you!

I'll answer some questions based on word of mouth from other OMS students and from browsing SDN

1. Yup, M4 years for audition rotations are where it's at. What do you want to match? ACGME Plastics, Rad Onc, Derm, Integrated IR, ENT, NSGY, and Uro are like nearly impossible, so don't put your hopes on these.

2. Board scores tump all, but don't be a lackluster student. You also need to get good grades to get a good class rank, which PDs certainly do look at.

3. High board scores, great LORs, honor a good amount of rotations, do research, etc

4. I'll leave it to some MS upperclassmen for this.

Sorry to hijack the thread but i'm curious about the bolded. Sdn usually seem to emphasize that pre-clinical grades are meaningless. But when i look at the NRMP program director's survey, it does actually correspond to what you're saying. I guess it's program specific?

For the bolded, be a superstar.
