How do I know if I have completed the reqs for Gen Bio. Most schools say 8 semester hours of General Bio with Lab. I've taken
Gen Bio I w/ Lab BIO 2010
Anatomy w/ Lab BIO 2025
Cell Bio BIO 2030
Physiology BIO 2035

and I'm currently enrolled in Biochemistry and will be taking microbiology in the fall. Am I going to run into problems with not meeting the gen bio reqs just because I didn't take a class called gen bio II. after completing gen bio I? will these other classes that were taught by the biology dept. i.e. physiology count. I'm somewhat confused b/c some schools say "BIO: 4 courses (intro + 3 upper-level animal bio courses)" while others say "Biology 8 semester hrs". I wonder if they consider any BIO 101 or higher to be "general biology".

Anyone else ever get confused about this?

I'd like to know too. I was actually in bio II but withdrew from it because I discovered it wasn't even needed for my major (wasn't pre-dental at the time). I'd hate to have to go back to it again

The main biology requirements are General Biology I and II.
There are a handful of schools that require Biochemistry - the rest strongly recommend it.
And I believe there are a few schools that want microbiology (i think).

Check with the schools you want to go to about Microbio and Biochem, but all schools have Gen Bio I and II as a pre req.

Lurk moar.
what?

The issue I'm facing is that the University I'm at doesn't offer Gen Bio I and II. They just offer Principles of Biology. When I was at a state school my freshman year they did offer Bio I and II which covered half of the gen bio book each semester. Here at the Universtiy they cover the whole book in one semester. has anyone else run into this?

I was a chemistry major and graduated three years ago. I have enrolled in a post-bac program in the last year and taken a semester each of bio(w/ lab), cell bio(w/lab), and biochem. I checked with Maryland before taking the classes and they assured me the cell bio course would satisfy the second semester of the bio requirement. My suggestion would be to check with the dental schools your applying to, and see what they recommend you take.

This one of the millions of questions that get posted here on SDN that can only be answered by calling the schools and asking directly. Sometimes I wonder if people are scared to call the schools. I guess they dont know that this in one of the most important things to do. Every school wants to hear from potential applicants, and every school has small little differences that they will accept. The only way to know is to call and ask.

ok Veneto, i'll get right on that. There goes all my minutes!

My school did not offer a second ben bio course either....but I have not run into a problem with any of the places I applied to.

yea I talked to the pre-professional advisor today and he said that I'm ok because I've taken cell bio, physiology, etc. Thanks

When they say 8 biology hours with lab, that is what they mean. Any classes from any biology department will usually work. There are so many variations of biology departments out there that it could be micro or anatomy or zoology or physiology etc.

Pick 8 hours you like and go for it. 🙂

try taking gen bio II because a lot of material from that class will show up on the DAT (ecology, animal physiology etc.). i remember a lot of schools were very specific about a "year of general biology". micro and cell are both good classes but not so useful as far as the DAT goes. i guess calling the schools is your best bet.
