What kind of classes do you need to be admitted for Dental? i know there is a general list, plus you need certain courses for certain schools.

anyone care to tell me?

what about the DAT? how is that like?

whats the scoring like? max score? etc.... sections covered. how the scoring is figured.

thanks guys.

Generally you can be safe by taking the following:

1 year of General Biology
1 year of General Chem
1 year of Organic Chem
1 year of Physics

Other than that you would have to contact a specific school or visit their website to see if any additional classes are need. For example, University of the Pacific asks for 2 years of Bio, not just 1. UNLV asks for 1 semester/2 quarters of Biochem. So it just depends on the school.

As far as the DAT goes, I can only help a little since I haven't taken it yet. Max score is 30. Sections covered are biology, chemistry, organic chem, quantative reasoning, and perceptability. If I'm wrong, someone correct! 🙂 Hope this helps.

Don't forget English. Many schools want you to have had English literature as well as English Composition.
As far as DAT is concerned, the average grade is about 17-18 and if you want to be on the safe side, it is good to have everything above 19. It is not a very hard test. Takes about 4:15 hours. If you take the topscore pro CD and take a look at it, you get a pretty good idea of how the computer format of the test is. Also a lot of quiestions have 5 choices rather than 4. I don't exactly remember what part of the test had 4 choices.

what about california schools?

since the healthcafe field in CA is sooooooooooooooooooo competitive, what are the numbers here?

so the DAT has 6 sections total? so the score you recieve will be averaged?

As far as California goes, the hardest schools to get into are UCSF and UCLA. The rest are private schools, which are a little easier because not as many people apply to them because of costs. State schools are definately cheaper, but more difficult to gain admissions. I'm from California and want to attend a dental school here, so I've done some research.

As far as the DAT, you will receive a seperate score for each section. I've seen people who only report 2 scores, which is a combined score for all the academics and one score for perceptability.

so how do the dental schools weigh out the different scores for the different sections.

like how on the MCAT if you do good on verbal -- most people dont -- they look at it as a good point.

etc.. etc..

unbump - you can find these answers a hundred times over using the search feature or by taking 5 minutes of your own time to look this up in a book or online.

no one asked you, if you dont have any answers then go find something else to do other than trying to antagonize people on this forum you little slut.

 ok, ok . . .

I just get tired of these people who want spoonfed answers without any effort on their part.

kmnfive - in addition to the courses already listed, I found physiology and molecular bio to be very useful for the DAT and I think admissions look favorably on them as well. Very similar to pre-med. Head on over to the DAT forum for TONS of great info on the DAT. Lots of good threads. And you can always hit search when you have a basic question - you'll probably find the answer quicker and in more detail. Come back with some meatier questions and we'll be glad to help you out!😉

With all-due respect kmnfive, there's no room for that stuff here. Maybe you should go back to the pre-med forum?

jaap, good reply. Sometimes I wonder how people actually find this website and not already know about the basic pre-reqs. And another thing, what's up with those Cougars?? They're disappointing me!! Being raised a BYU fan I don't know if I can sit through another season like this!

ok, i'm not up-to-date with the current thread "lingo." so what does bump mean? are you guys refering the B2k song featureing Puff? just playing

lol.. so you would equate the fact of finding this website to the fact of knowing all about the dental school process ?

the logic that some of you people use is amusing.

anyways i didnt mean to upset anyone. its just theres a big difference in acting like a jerk and being forced into it. regardless of how stupid the questions are. isnt this the place to ask? the simple fact of the matter is this forums is a place where questions meet answers. people helping each other out.

there is no need for silly hostility.

no offense jaap. =)
