The Revised GRE is going to be implemented this coming August. I was just wondering how different the test will be and if the new one will be harder than the old. I am considering taking the general gre, which will give me less time to study but at this point I will do whatever it takes especially if the test will be easier. What are your thoughts on this change?

my understanding is that the new GRE isn't going to be THAT different (they were testing it in my experimental section when I took the GRE last fall). They are adding a couple new question types - one is a fill in the blank paragraph. I think that they were adding something to the math section as well. I only saw the verbal though.

If you're getting a book or taking a class with Princeton Review or Kaplan or any of those, they all know about the new question types and will help you study for them.

I don't the test would be significantly harder, but the new content may take getting used to, especially if you have become accustomed to the older format.

"This" coming August? You mean next August 2011, right?

Yeah, I'm sure that is what the OP meant. Nearly scared me a little but the fact he/she meant August is supposed to be a year from now. But currently they throw a few questions (if any at all) in the "regular" sections and the experimental just tests any new question they want to use. If you are waiting until next year, it should not be too bad. But you never know, they allow you to use the (on-screen) calculator on quantitative and you can skip around the questions on a section (currently only for overseas or a dire reason to take the paper version).

it's the GRE, not the MCAT, you totally don't need a year to study for it... actually to be completely honest I don't think you even need an hour to study for it... that stuff is 9th-10th grade material at best...

PS actually to be 100% honest with ya, I thought the SAT was harder than the GRE

I think walking in unprepared is pretty silly. There are certain patterns that show up on the GRE and studying for them helps to get great scores. Also, those have been out of school a few years and those who are poor test takers definitely want to prepare. Telling people they don't need to study is pretty crappy advice, sorry. Congrats to you for doing well by not studying but most people who are taking it seriously probably do want to look some stuff over.

I got a 2280 (1520 V/Q) on the SAT, but only a 1330 on the GRE. The quantitative portions are comparable, but the Verbal is a MONSTER. Advising people not to study for the GRE is irresponsible and just horrible advice.

I suggest taking a few days to freshen up on the math, and a few months to go over a few dozen words a night if you want to do well on the Verbal.

A LOT of university-wide fellowships/scholarships are granted to students based on GRE scores, so these should not be taken lightly if you want more financial assistance going into school.
