Disclaimer: I understand I am pre-med, have a while to decide, need more exposure, etc, etc etc, before I am able to have a true idea of which area I want to practice medicine in.

HOWEVER, many secondaries ask which area of medicine I envision myself working in the future. If I HAD to choose, I would say I am most interested in general internal medicine. I am also interested in incorporating research into my career on some level. Would anyone be kind enough to offer some insight into how I could potentially conduct research as a general internist?

Thanks!

All doctors can conduct research. Get some research experience at your undergrad and learn the lingo. Medical schools often offer research electives to build off your undergraduate experience, so starting early will help you make the most of these experiences when you get there.

Also, make sure to do shadowing, preferably with a lot of different specialties; this will give you a better feel for which specialty you might like.
