Is it just me, or are most DO applicants unaware of the merger? This is just based on a few DO interviews I have attended this cycle.. but every time I ask them about it casually, they are always like "huh? what merger?"

I feel as if this has to do with the fact that most applicants are not on SDN.. but I'm not sure.

Yeah there is definitely a lack of awareness. Or they go the opposite direction and talk about how they won't need to take the USMLE and will be able to now apply to MGH ortho with just COMLEX.

I was at an interview yesterday and asked a question to the 1st year students about how they're prepping for the merger and one student literally said "what merger?" A campus admissions rep responded a little differently, saying that students get resources for both sets of boards. But it just seems strange, such a big thing and no one knows about it?

Thankfully I haven't seen it so bad that actual students have no idea. Mostly just pre-meds. The admins just always act like everything is A-okay and that COMLEX is king. Only DMU shot straight and told is all to plan on taking the USMLE and that we needed to work harder than before if we wanted something competitive.

On another note pre-meds really need to start doing their homework. I have talked to three people in the last two days who had no clue about grade replacement and they are applying this year. There needs to be big announcements on this sort of thing, and not just noticed on obscure websites.

I contribute this lack of awareness, and my fortuitous awareness, to gaining acceptances at my first choice school. While other students were asking questions that showed a lack of preparedness, I was able to ask about maintaining osteopathic identity post merger etc., and I think it helped me stand out.

There is a lot of bs information from DO admin people out there about how the COMLEX could be a substitute for the USMLE. It's not. This is one of the reasons why I appreciate the truthfulness from my school. Everyone, from the Dean, Associate Dean, Residency Manager, and Advisor, pretty much told me that I should prepare for the USMLE and cram for the COMLEX.

Skirting around this issue doesn't help the situation, but only affirm that DO students are ill prepared for residency in general.

Curious as to which school you're at now. But yeah, I think it's wise to crush both sets of boards. That's the easiest thing that's in OUR control

Hell, most Faculty are unaware of it as well. Don't sweat it.
