Hey. Do you have any safety schools just incase? Just wanted to ask because some schools may not let you continue the admissions process with under a 3.0. Especially some of the top schools such as BU, GW, USC, and tufts. Maybe apply to safety schools which are lower ranked because your gpa is on the lower end? And those are the top OT programs?

Just giving advice because I would want someone to give me that advice too 🙂 best of luck and I hope whatever happens you are happy!

Hi there! Thanks for your question. Having been in the area a couple years now I don’t see much opportunity around. There are many private practices, but there’s only 1 major hospital in the state. I’m also mostly interested in pediatrics which is not readily available in the outpatient setting for most in the state (there is only 1 pediatric outpatient rehab center). It has more to do with following school than the school itself. I have a lot of faith the program at UVM will be great.

Hi! My safety schools are GW (since it’s a rather new program that is not yet accredited), Johnson & Wales, and KGI. I Currently have interviews for KGI and Johnson and Wales so fingers crossed that goes well!

I have been pretty concerned about my undergrad GPA, but am hoping that schools can see that I’m experienced in healthcare and since my prerequisite GPA is almost a 4.0 that the low GPA had more to do with an unsure 18 year old rather than a poorly motivated student 😁 I’m really passionate about OT so I’m excited to show that to the schools who are willing to get to know me.

As you can see, I've applied a wide range in schools in size, price, rigor, stature, private/public, research, and location. A few days ago, I received my acceptance letter from UVM! I'm flabbergasted by the fact that any program will have me! As a non-traditional student with a bumpy academic history, I was unsure of my candidacy.

Does anyone have a status on the inaugural semester over at UVM? How's it going? I am slightly unsure about entering a brand-new program. Moreover, they want me to commit by Nov 11th for the following fall! Is this standard practice? Am I being scammed? I doubt that I will hear from any programs until at least the end of November. How am I to the way my options, detail a budget, and visit schools? I feel pressured to commit because, as they say, a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

If anyone else is experiencing a similar dilemma, I'd love to hear about it.

Congrats on your interview that’s huge news 🙂 I unfortunately don’t have much insight into the UVM program itself, so not quite sure how to compare. I was very nervous about being accepted to an OTD program because my GPA was lower on OTCAS. I had no idea that OTCAS would take into account the classes I took in high school through DUAL enrollment. However, good news is I have been accepted to the schools I interviewed at!
For those who are in the same boat as me, I think having 250 hours of observation and being an NREMT really helped my application stand out!

I have been fortunate to get into a couple of OT schools in the last week. Both are decent options, but out of state (expensive!) and still waiting for in-state schools. I have an interview with one in-state school in a couple of weeks, but it is after the deadline to accept with a deposit ($500) for the two schools I got into already. If I put a deposit for one of those two schools and then if I get into an in-state school can I go in-state (realize I will lose the deposit to the other school) or I am locked into attending the school I put the first deposit on?

After you put a deposit down for a school, you can withdrawal your admission as long as its like a month or so before starting date (schools vary on this). I put a deposit down for a school but then rescinded it a month later to go to a different program and got a partial refund! I actually asked my advisor about this at my undergrad and he confirmed that people do this often!

you can put the deposit to secure the spot but you still can change your plan after. will lose 500

I only got an email right after I submitted saying they have received it. I joined a virtual open house 2 days after submitting and they said it will take about 4 weeks to review. I joined another one that was 5 weeks after I submitted and they said they’re waiting for clusters of applications so they have other people to compare to and that it could take until February 😫

Hi!! Congrats on your acceptance! I was curious if you attended your interview with Emory & Henry, and if so, would you mind sharing how it went? I have one scheduled there in January. 🙂

Hi, Yes I attended my interview with Emory & Henry and got accepted (did not choose to go there though)! I hope you see this before your interview. The initial interview is conducted by a faculty member and a current student. The women were both nice and friendly and made me feel at ease when I was interviewing. I think they made me feel the most comfortable out of the three interviews I attended! There is also a writing prompt where they have you respond to a question that asks you to define a topic and give an example from your life. After that, they had some students and a faculty member talk about SOTA and COTAD. Then, there was a group activity with a few other applicants where you play a game that relates to Occupational Therapy which was fun. (Ultimately didn't choose to go due to location, but they definitely seem to have a great program and friendly/welcoming staff and students.)

I was very nervous about being accepted to an OTD program because my GPA was lower on OTCAS. I had no idea that OTCAS would take into account the classes I took in high school through DUAL enrollment. However, good news is I have been accepted to the schools I interviewed at!
For those who are in the same boat as me, I think having 250 hours of observation and being an NREMT really helped my application stand out!
