Hi,

I'm trolling again (my bad), but anyway, do dentists have to know the rest of the human anatomy besides the stuff above one's shoulders? I think being a dentist would be fun in theory, but teeth anatomy doesn't really excite me that much unless it involves surgery. I'm mainly into surgery, but I've heard that in Dentistry, the only surgical related field is OMFS, and that that is practically impossible to attain. Does this mean that I'm basically more suited to medicine, or is there something else in dentistry that might float my boat?

Dentists have a general understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the entire body, but have a more specific understanding of head and neck, and an even more specific understanding of the oral cavitiy.

If teeth anatomy turns you off, med school isn't going to be any more fun. I'd rather learn teeth anatomy than every little part of each bone in the entire body.

What does it mean to be mainly into surgery? As in doing stuff with your hands, blood and guts? What? Dentists, even general dentists, do surgery on a daily basis. Oral surgeons do even more surgery. Endodontists do surgery, periodontists do surgery, even some orthodontists do surgery, and prothodontists do surgery. All dentists for the most part do surgery.

I think you should spend some more time exploring both. The best thing you can do is get in and job shadow. Find out what both are really like first hand.

I can't tell you what you like and don't like or which you are better suited for. If you want me to be honest, I'd say based on your post, I'm not convinced you're suited for either yet. Keep asking questions, learn what both fields are about, get in and shadow. I read all sorts of stuff about medicine and dentistry, but what really sealed the deal for me was job shadowing. Seeing exactly what you will be doing first hand and then considering if you really want to do that is the quickest and best way to find the answer to your questions.

To be able to tell whether or not someone is suited for what...shouldn't we have some sort of first hand experiance ourselves?

😀

........GO SHADOW, It should be clear as glass with flourinated water what u like and dislike.

There is a reason Dental schools require it..
