Is a general studies degree shady or what , I can get one through my continuing education studies program at my school but I am wondering if I will have problems later on with this "gimmicky" degree.

Who offers a General Studies degree? How boring!! Anyway its not very impressive. Concentate on sciences and make a commitment if you want to go into dentistry

i agree.

I talked to an admissions officer at Pacific about the general studies degree and she said they don't care as long as you have the dental core classes, the grades and the DAT scores to get in. Now i'm doing General Studies and i love it. why kill yourself taking useless classes? i.e. evolution or spectrochemistry....

oliverbrooklyn,
no. a general studies degree is not shady. ask any adcom and they'll tell you they don't care about what degree you get, they care about numbers (ie 4.00), not if you opted for a general studies major.

if you can get good grades and get your degree fast, without a doubt i'd recommend whatever degree that will arrive you at this point. it is futile to study anymore science than the pre-req's if it takes longer and if your gpa will suffer as a result of it.

that's why we have the dat; it equalizes all degrees, schools, and students

Any degree is better than no degree. I got in without one, but now-adays you kind of need one. Dental schools are not to the point to care what it is in, just get it. Just like the previous post said. So having said that, go for basketweaving or something fun.

Yea, I suppose it doesn't really matter what degree you have. I have a Poli sci degree. But you are going to want more than just the listed prereqs. If you want to improve your chances take Biochem, Anatomy, Microbiology.

I think anyone can call anything boring if they are doing something more exiting. for example Dwayne Wade probably thinks that orthodontics although coveted by mainy of us would be a waste of time because he will make more shooting hoops! -Oliver

although having a general studies degree (provided you've taken the pre-req sciences) will not adversely affect your chances of getting into dental school... it doesn't change the fact that you stil got a degree in a Van Wilder -esque "General Studies"...

Well... there are a lot of sales type jobs for corporations that require any degree. So that would fill that. A job that comes to mind is drug reps.

Basically if you are not sure what you want to do, give it a try. I don't think you'll have problems because of your degree and it's definitely not shady.
Personally I don't have any experience with general studies but my friend does and he's pretty happy with his degree. Also he's working part time as a sales person in some corporation.
Actually, if you are still not sure, check this article from custom writing company about whether general studies is a waste of time or no.
