Why were they so low (~80%)? Is it because of people that apply to both GS and combined/integrated residencies get into the combined program and "count" as not matching in GS?

There were only 5 unmatched categorical GS spots (out of 1185). I am not sure what this 80% rate you are talking about is.

i don't know if his number is correct or not, but what he is referring to is the number of applicants applying to general surgery vs. the number that actually matched. i.e. 1180/total applicants...i dont know if that's 80%, but that's what he's talking about. not 1180/1185 which is spots filled, which is what you're talking about

Well, besides US seniors, there are other groups participating in the match: US grads, Osteo, Canadians, US IMGs, non-US IMGs. FYI, in 2012, out of 1146 spots, US seniors got 914, US grads 76, Osteo 36, US IMGs 59, and non-US IMGs 57. Overall, 90% of the spots was covered by US grads/seniors. However, the applicants for GS are at least twice as many as the available spots, so I would consider the 80% match rate of US senior satisfactory (as opposed to the ~10% rate of IMGs, for instance).

It would be interesting to see what other people think though.

I thought the 80%ish match rate for US grads was historically accurate over the past several years?

I found it interesting that, like IM for e.g., GS has a wide variation in the "competitiveness" of the field overall. Some places were crazy competitive from LoR to scores and AOA while others much much less so.

I know several that only did "big name" ranks while also applying to ENT or plastics - maybe the siphoning off skewed the results.
