I an a former resident of this program so I can pretty much tell you what ever you want to know about it. Students days start at around 6AM. They are expected compile all of the pt Vitals and labs on to the list that the teams maintain. This takes awhile, but there are usually at least 2 students on service at a time so with it divided is usually never a problem to have done by 7. After that you will meet up with the team you are working with to start on rounds. At this time the Chief may tell you to go in a specific case if an extra pair of hands are needed or to just go in what ever you want. While the hospital is not huge, the case load is pretty good and with a good variety. Lots of Surgical Oncology (especially pancreatic cases), Vascular and Bariatrics to go along with General Surgery. You also may get to see a transplant depending on when they start. Weekends are split amongst the students so you guys will figure that out when you are there, but figure that you will be there for at least one of them. There are conferences M,W,F and you need to dress up for the wednesday one, but can change into scrubs when its over. Several of the attendings and residents are very good at teaching the students and will ive you the opportunity to learn alot from them. You will probably figure out who they are fairly quickly. Remember that Surgery residents are pressured to work very fast, so we try to answer questions and teach, but at times it is very difficult depending on the day. You may hear that program is fairly malignant, which is more true for residents than students, but has been improving yearly and should be much improved next year, so I wouldn't really worry about that. Even if they know you don't want to do surgery if you show up on time and get the work done that they ask you to and have a good attitude they will like you. Some of the favorite students we had were people who said the wanted to do FM or IM so don't worry about getting ignored if surgery isn't your thing. Students usually are sent home by 6PM or a little earlier, but sometimes stay later if there is a case they want to stay for. Students get 6$ a meal in the cafe and the food is pretty good for a hospital, but don't expect to have time to sit down and eat three meals. Students usually get a least a quick lunch, but don't expect breakfast or a prolonged lunch break. Overall it is a busy month, but you will get what you put into it. Hope this sums it up.
