hello everyone,

I am a 4th year medical student and just wanted to thank this forum.

I am interested in anesthesia and have applied for the match this upcoming year, and feel that after reading this forum, I am making a very informed decision in terms of my future. After talking to many of my classmates, I feel I have a much better grasp of the politics and intricacies of the profession after reading this forum that I simply would not have been aware of by talking to residents and attendings. People are very honest here probably due to the anonymous factor and I truly appreciate it. This forum has really opened my eyes.

I know many of my classmates that were initially interested in anesthesia change their minds because they don't think the money will be there in a few years. I love anesthesia and despite many people trying to talk me out of it, I simply can't see myself doing anything else. I did 8 weeks of anesthesia rotations and loved every minute of each one. I always went early and left late, not because they made me, but because I actually had fun. I can't say the same for most of my other rotations. Even though things are rough with mid levels, I will work my butt off to try and "save" (perhaps a poor choice of words) this profession for myself and the people that come after me.

I remember reading in a previous thread, "I would rather do anesthesia with a pediatrician's salary rather than be a pediatrician". Replace peds with any specialty and that's my mindset right now.

applications are sent out... keeping my fingers crossed.

just wanted to thank everyone here for helping out an ignorant student.

Good for you-screw your classmates-no one can predict the market anyway. Only 2 other people from my med school class went into anesthesia and we are all very happy with the field we have chosen. Good luck with the interviews!!!

I just want to echo anesorbust's sentiments and thank this forum and everyone who has contributed to it.

I am also a 4th year medical student who just applied for the match this upcoming year and am very excited to be entering the field of anesthesiology. I have been a lurker on this forum for awhile now, but felt compelled to reply to this post as I have found the information and discussions here to be invaluable in educating myself about the politics, difficulties, and uncertainty facing the profession. While I loved both of my anesthesia rotations and honestly could not see myself doing anything else, I feel much better knowing that I am making an informed decision about my future. Despite all of the skepticism, speculation, and others trying to convince me that another field would be "safer", I know that I have made the right decision for me. It is always inspiring to see posts from anesthesiologists that have been doing this for awhile and still absolutely love what they do.

So, thank you and please keep sharing your wisdom with those of us that are just starting down the path. We really do appreciate it!

You will do very well. It sounds like you are following your passion. You can never go wrong that. Also, FYI, there are still lots of great practices and jobs. Just become the best anesthesiologist you can and everything will work out. Good luck.

I completely, 100% agree with anesorbust!!!! I'm in this for better or worse, til death do us part. 😉 It's good to know what a true passion in life feels like. Can't wait for residency!

I'm glad not all students are scared away from this field because of the illegitimate paid studies by the CRNAs. Best of luck with match
