I would contact your GME office.

If you do not feel that is an option, perhaps assistant PDs or department chair? From the info you have provided, the PD’s behavior sounds pretty ridiculous.

Hey, that sounds tough. However remember one thing, residency always ends and there is light at the end of the tunnel. As residents, I would tread lightly and just get through your 3 years and be done with this program. Put your time in and then get out without having any bad marks put on your file.

And yes, I feel for your group. However, your career can become threatened very quickly by one individual especially while your still a resident.

Also, maybe the residents can chip in for a new laptop or something that was destroyed as well for this unlucky person to help this resident in need.

What would I do?
Nothing, residency is a short 3 years and then you never have to deal with said d*ck of a PD. No need to stir up the hornets nest and have a target on you bc you pissed off a PD.
As I have said several times on this forum, taking the high road is a skill you need to master and know when to fight and when not to bother with things bc it’s not winnable.
It’s a good story to tell when you are old about that “jerk of a PD” way back when.

Based on this side of the story I agree this situation sounds unbelievably punitive towards V. Maybe they're on the **** list for previous actions, who knows. But it does seem unreasonable.

Your institution has a DIO (designated institutional official) - they function almost in a capacity like the PD's boss. They help make sure one person (the PD) doesn't hold complete and unilateral authority over the program.

I would talk to this person and see 1) do they exist? 2) how are they related to the PD (best friends?) 3) Can they help corral some of this behavior

Again, realizing this is only one side of the story but this is how a new program gets a malignant reputation and turns into an IMG sweatshop

What occurred between the PD and "V" is between the PD and "V." It is not your battle to fight. If "V" wants to go down the rabbit hole of the PD treating him/her unfairly, that's on him/her. Does "V" know that you've taken the saga public on a message board?

Unless the behavior has been truly egregious, this is one to just let go and chock up to fact that residency sucks.

Not always the best option, I agree bu necessary in some cases. Not every situation needs to be a crusade which leads to more problems down the road and the OP having a target on his head (we all have seen it in residency and feel bad for the person).
