Generally speaking, how time consuming is research?

So, I have never done research before and was wondering if it's quite time consuming in terms of being like a part time/ full time job? Or is it more along the lines of something you can do for 3 hours on the weekend like volunteering? I am pretty limited with time at the moment, so I won't be able to commit fully if it's time consuming. Thank you.

Wet lab research? Depends upon the project. But it's unlikely you be allowed into a lab with no supervision on a weekend.

Data analysis and/or numbers crunching. That's doable.

Thank you, I mean for now I was thinking of doing the in-lab type of research where you're messing with petri dishes. But i'll see about doing it at a later time then.
