I've been visiting this website quite a bit for the past 2 years. Viewing the competition, you could say. Finally decided to make an account for a rate me! 😀

Junior Chemistry Undergrad Minoring in Philosophy
GPA 3.18
sGPA 2.964
200 + Volunteering hours
100 + Shadowing hours
Starting research next semester
Bilingual in Russian
Just started studying for the MCAT, taken one practice got a 23, hoping to get that up to a 29/30 range.

I'm a resident of Kansas City, so KCUMB would be the ideal DO school for me. Any chance of getting in there, or what?

Thanks, guys!

I also forgot to mention, the shadowing was of a primary physician, cardiologist, and neurosurgeon. I've also been working 15-25 hours weekly since starting school, and been involved in a club sport ( no affiliation with the school ).

It is imperative, above all else, that you get your sGPA above 3.0, and your cGPA as high as you can. For you, those are important enough to cut back on ECs if that's what it takes to get As.

I was thinking of applying this summer, do you think I should wait until after my senior year, or maybe I should even extend another year, just to boost my gpa to 3.3ish

That is what I would do. You get one shot at being a first time applicant, better maximize your odds.

Do you guys think a letter from an alumni of KCUMB would help the application?

KCUMB will reject you right now. You gotta get your science gpa above 3.0 in order to not get automatically rejected. and kcumb is a pretty competitive school so you need to get it as high as you can.

🙁
Will a letter from a DO contribute to lower-tier schools? I mean, does it have any impact whatsoever?

yes things like a letter from a DO can only help you. i think after you take your mcat you should go from there because you cant tell someone their chances without an mcat score so its pointless to speculate, no offense. with a 30 youd get some love, with a 23 prob not. if you get in the 25-26 range you prob want to retake some science classes and build your ECs. feel free to see my MDapps for comparison. I was a bit of an underdog this season by SDN standards and received five interview invites so far.

Hey, congrats on getting in. Us underdogs have it rough, haha. I'm really hoping to retake a couple classes from my first 3 semesters. Bio II, Cell Bio, and Orgo 1 were all C/C+'s so that kind of put me down. I don't think applying this summer will be the best choice unless like you said, my mcat is in the 30's.

Yup, 100%. They just rejected me for the same reason (sub 3.25 on sGPA and cGPA). If you really want KCUMB your grades need to come up big time. In fact, if you want to dodge the pre-screen at many DO schools you need to get back over 3.00.

As far as a DO letter, you definitely -need- one. A lot of schools require one specifically from a DO, while others will take a letter from any physician. If you know an alumni and want to enlist their help in getting you in, you're either going to have to have them find a way to get you past the pre-screening or bring your numbers up.

Good news for you is you still have time.

If your mcat is a 28 or so you may still get in as long as you aren't picky.
