It's out. Don't know how much cheaper it is yet. I'm sure it's still expensive but at least for some of our patients, their copays are much cheaper on generics.

I asked a local pharmacist about Lipitor, which goes off patent this month. He told me that, when a med goes generic, whomever is producing it gets a 6 month window of exclusivity, so the price will not drop significantly. However, after 6 months, prices can drop greatly.

I have gotten so far just one phone call from a pharmacy telling me that a generic is out and that switching the patient's med will save them $90 per month for that specific patient's insurance plan. Only one so far but I'm anticipating a flood of calls along the same lines.

Some people's insurance are to the effect that they must pay up to an X amount before their insurance covers it, generic or otherwise. For patients in that category, it'll make no difference unless their copay happens to be extremely high, on the order of hundreds of dollars a month for a medication. Others are in a type of payment structure where they pay a small copay for a generic no matter how expensive the generic is, but pay a big copay for the tradename. The patients in that category will stand to save a heck of a lot of money.
