So I'm registering for my second sophomore semester. I just took Bio 111 which was the Principles intro course.

However, I'm seeing that most people in my school go on to Genetics without taking 112? I don't get it... I thought Genetics was just an elective. The admissions reqs that I've looked at say that I need to take Bio in sequence (like OHSU).

In addition, the 111 course isn't a required pre-req for 112. My adviser doesn't seem to know much about dental schools - is the med school track different?

I looked at other topics, but I'm still not sure about my question..

Thanks!

Take second part of biology since is a requirement...do genetics in addition since they encourage students to take additional science classes

Take the Bio 112 course. You need to have 8 semester hours of "General Biology," which in your case, I'm guessing its Bio 111/112.

I highly recommend Genetics though: it looks good to have and it'll help studying for the DAT (although not that much)

And no, Dental School track is essentially the same thing as Med-School track

I'm in similar situation. I took a general biology class which is a semester long course when I was undergraduate. So, now I'm taking all general biology classes again since all of school want at least one year course from bio pre-req. I applied to OHSU this year, and they said I have to retake the bio classes with one year course again. I feel like wasting money and time.😡

Okay, that makes me feel better. But just to make sure... here is description for 112:

A survey of the major groups of prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms. The evolutionary history of living organisms is traced from the most simple prokaryotes to the highly complex plants and animals. Parallel trends and adaptations are discussed in addition to the unique features of each group. Laboratories consist of the examination of the structure and characteristics of the major groups.

Does that sound like the right material? Sorry, I just need to ease my paranoia. 🙂

Thanks!

The description is written differently and may sound differently from school to school. Ask an advisor or an older student if 112 is gen bio 2. In my school 111 is gen bio 1 and 112 was gen bio 2. They should be the number right after each other, but make sure just in case. Ask around or look at the name of the course. Is it general biology 2?

If you have a pre-health professions advisor, I would recommend to go to this person. In some cases, they don't know what they're talking about, but even the not so competent ones should be able to help you plan out the appropriate coursework.
