Hi,

I'm about to start genetics in summer school. This will be my second time taking it - I took it three years ago and got a C+. I am taking it at the same university that I took it the first time, but this time the class is 5 weeks instead of 10. Three years ago the class was taught by 3 professors that switched off every 2 weeks; the first midterm was the second week of class. This time, the class only has one professor so I am hoping I will waste less time adjusting to his teaching style; the midterm is the third week of class.

Any advice about learning/studying genetics would be helpful. I have started reading the book and looked up the previous class websites, which have the exams posted (obviously the questions change but the test formating seems pretty consistent). Are there any helpful websites or review books people recommend? I guess I'm just looking for suggestions because I'm very nervous.

Thanks.

Genetics in 5 weeks !!! This is gonna be brutal.

One text that I have found to be really great is the Primer of Genetic Analysis... It was written by several professors at the University of Oklahoma, and is an awesome review book/ problem-oriented text. Definitely not completely exhaustive on details, which is the purpose of an actual textbook, but it has plenty of problems to work with clear explanations about how to work with them. Dr. James N. Thompson Jr. is the first author, and it was written with Dr. Jenna Hellack, Dr. Gerald Braver, and Dr. David Durica. All are quite accomplished geneticists, and I have found the book to be incredibly helpful. I was a TA for Dr. Thompson's genetics class last semester, and the most important thing, for me at least, was remaining caught up in the class. Almost everything in genetics builds on itself, and especially in 5 weeks, there is no time to play catch-up. Also, do plenty of practice problems. Every professor emphasizes different things, and you will have to get a feel, quickly of course, for what your professor emphasizes. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask! I really would recommend the Primer!!!

Thank you for resource information and advice about staying caught up. That's pretty cool you were a TA for the author himself.

Relax, genetics is not that difficult. Record your profs lecture and listen to the audio to remember stuff. if he provides power point, then memorize the slides. i never read the book for that class.reading seemed like a waste of time to me

I'm watching this since in in the same book.
