Genomics/ proteomics / bioinformatics

while i'm posting.. I'm wondering if any of you MSTPers or pre-MSTPers know who's who among programs with the rising genomics/proteomics/ bioinformatics-type fields.

I'm asking as one with a disease-genetics research background (wet lab) who wants training in these information technology areas during my MD/PhD.

From what i've seen, some programs seek to teach biologists/biomed people what they need to know in computer science (e.g. UW Dept of Genome Sciences) while others are not so integrated.

I want to be able to develop AND use these technologies.

Any thoughts? esp from those within programs right now...

You might consider UC Irvine's Biomedical Informatics track.

They allow you to do as much as you want, you get a thesis co-advisor in the Computer Science department, you will learn to write code, the choice to use off the shelf stuff or develop your own is up to you.

there are a few places of note that are offering programs that have a concentration in this:

a lot of places that are starting initiatives like BioX at stanford have integrative approaches like this available. university of michigan just secured funding for a huge new center that would be very much like the bioX thing - and ucla is in the process of building theirs - mit/harvard have their own large initiative in this field as well. i'm not sure if these programs actually have what you are looking for, but chances are reasonably high that they would . i know for a fact that the cornell/ski/rock tri-I program has sunk in a ton of money for this express purpose. sloan-kettering cancer center is building a huge core disease based bioinformatics core that regularly helps out or interfaces with schools in the nyc area. cornell med also has quite a few people in this area - pm Dark_Child - he is doing this exact sort of work right now.

Take a look into UCSD program...with all of the biotech's down in La Jolla, UCSD is partnering up with them and offering programs in bioinformatics, pharmacogenomics, and other bad ass stuff...

Any institution that is a member of the protein data bank will be seeing an EXPLOSION in bioinformatics and such:

Too bad Rutgers has no MSTP.... but UCSD's is great.
