Hello;

As a high school senior, I was wondering if anyone on here as had experience attending GMU with a interest in pre-med. How is their college of science, and the opportunities available? I found a broken link on matriculation data to Med School so was wondering if anyone had new data. Thanks in advance.

Really large school with little College of Science funding. If you are looking for a "pre-med advising program," Mason doesn't really have one. You won't be guided at all in Mason, if you're interested in medicine, then you'll have to figure things out on your own rather than an adviser laying it out step-by-step.

There are some amazing professors at Mason, and definitely a lot who aren't. I highly suggest you attend the Honors College at Mason if you do decide to go there. The opportunities awarded by the Honors College are tremendous.

Thanks for the insight. I have been accepted to Mason's Honors Program, so it sounds like I'll be in good hands. INOVA's volunteer system is a bit unlucky cause they do the lottery thing. I can't seem to find many internships for high school seniors in this area however. Most look to be for college students.

i did my post-bacc classes at Mason in fairfax. if you are a phlebotomist or anything like that, look at jeanie schmidt free clinic in herndon. i volunteered out there, and it was great.

Are you looking at any other Virginia schools?

I am lookin at UVA, (regular decision). i'd prefer to stay close to home, also because I've been accepted into the Mason Honors (cuts out alot of credits).

Thank you. I think free clinics are a really good idea. Did you have any experience at the hospital, or do you think it's worth contacting doctors in the area with private practices?

If you can get into UVA, even with no merit money, go there and never look back. Regular joe schmoe at UVA has access to much more stuff than some Honors College star at GMU...

Source: I am from VA and one would be real dumb not to go to UVA if given the chance
