Anyone have any thoughts about the Georgetown gen surgery residency program? In particular, what are people's thoughts on its reputation, clinical training, research opportunities, etc. Any viewpoints would be welcome.

I feel for you. I hate when a post goes unanswered for so long. I interviewed at Georgetown and really liked what I saw. Of course someone else might completely disagree.

Reputation: Overshadowed by GW somewhat, but I have also heard that GW can be somewhat malignant (complete heresay). From what I gather, G-town surgery is a historically well-established program with a very good reputation. I know one chief this year is going to UC Irvine for plastic surgery (he is personally an excellent person by the way), one will be going onto CT at a reputable place (i forget where) and I believe another is going into pediatrics. I forget the other two. Their Chairman/PD Dr. Evans was very friendly and after going to other interview, even on the west coast, he seems to be well known.

Clinical Training: G town is a level II trauma center, so call may not be as hectic as it otherwise would be. Do not fret however, residents rotate through Washington Hospital Center for exposure to level I trauma. Chiefs and interns seemed to be very happy with their clinical training. They rotate at a VA and other private hospitals for bread and butter stuff. Hosptial seemed to be on the older side, but they had electronic imaging and labs. Also has a clinical skills lab where they practice on stations as well as some live animals at times.

Research Opportunities: I don't believe research is mandatory, but it seems to be highly encouraged. I got the idea that if you don't find something that interests you on campus, they have a network in the DC area to find you a position that will suit you. Again, they want to train academic surgeons, so it seemed important for them to make sure you can do the research you want. Sorry I don't remember any specifics.

Overall, I was very happy to interview there. I really enjoyed the residents, the staff ,the faculty and especially the chariman/pd. Cost of living was my only concern, but I think it is worth it.

I hope this helps.

How does Georgetown rank among gen surg programs? Would it be considered second tier, or lower? How does it compare to GW? Any additional info would be most useful, thanks 🙂

I also interviewed there last year, and loved it. Dr. Evans is a great PD. DC is also a great city.

agree with others: dr. evans is fantastic and is a great reason to go to the program.

chiefs all matched in competitive fellowships. residents do seem to spend a lot of time treating vip-type "entitled" pts.

research is mandatory, but it doesn't have to be in a designated lab. you can go get your mph if you want. money isn't guaranteed if you go elsewhere, but dr. evans pledged to support you in pursuit of funding. the whole "academic" focus is relatively new. dr. evans said that since he started advertising that and requiring research that more competitive applicants started applying.

i liked the program a lot, and i liked the people. they have a night float system so interns are q14 8/12 months. however, one of the attendings at my school heard from a former resident (now fellow at guh) that he wasn't impressed with the residents there and that they were lazy.

not sure about reputation, but i know it's growing.
