Hey

did anybody else get an email from the program director at Georgetown. I got an email today from Dr. Adams, welcoming me to my upcoming interview and it was very personal. He mentioned specific aspects of my applications and why i would be a good fit for the program. mentioned things directly from my personal statement.

i can't tell if this is a good or bad thing. are they heavily recruiting because they are having a hard time finding good applicants or are they just a really awesome program with a great program director????

any thoughts?

take care and good luck

I am sure you are a stellar canidate and that they are recruiting you for your acomplishments. This is definately a good thing or at the very least it can not be deemed a bad thing.

However the reputation of Georgetown's Internal Medicine Program has suffered greatly in the past few years. I think they are having a hard time finding good applicants. I know that some PD's in the northeast have told their students to avoid the program if possible. Even students from George Washington have been told not to apply to GT. The feeling is that it is overratted and i guess that the financial situtation doesn't help either. Unless you really need to be in DC, there are many other program that may better suit you in the northeast.

As in IM applicant last year, I echo the same things. I actually never did visit Georgetown, so my I can only tell you so much, but when asking about programs, my PD (who is brutally honest when answering any question) told me "it would be a waste of my time." I remember that quite well, cause it took me by surprise. He particularly said they have lost tons of money leading to cutbacks in research and faculty and that they don't do cardiac cath, which means "you won't learn to manage acute MI's" (once again, I don't know if this is true, but I remember this being repeated when I went on the interview trail)

Regardless, your are probably a very strong candidate and good luck with the matching process.

So actually my suspicions are correct......Georgetown has to put extra energy into recruiting quality applicants because they have been less successful in doing so in the past few matches. you guys are not the first to tell me this. i'm not too concerned though because DC is my last choice, geographically. i guess it was nice to get an email from the PD though.

now if only hopkins and upenn would send me emails before my interviews at those places, hmmmmm........ somehow i don't think that will happen.

thanks for the helpful advice.

good luck to you!
