Someone made an interesting point on the MCAT average at Georgetown SMP (29.6) It is better than some lower end med schools, and so I would think that anyone doing this program would expect to get into higher end med schools upon completion....Do most of the people you talk to in the SMP program aim to get into the better, hgher-end med schools?

My situation is this. My GPA is about 3.2, and my April 2004 MCAT was a 27. So I figured that neither is good enough for the schools I want to go to (top 40). So I will retake the MCAT in April 2005, and score high enough A. to get into Georgetown SMP and B. good enough to get into med schools as well (Hopefully a 32 or above). But if I get a good enough score, does that mean I should even go through with the SMP program....Will it help that much?? Or would I be better off working or volunteering abroad. Basically, I wish I had assurances that with a good MCAT and a successful completion of Georgetown SMP, I could get into a top tier medical school. I know that no one truly knows the answer to this question, but any advice would be Much appreciated.
and lady wolverine.....I'll have the pleasure of watching Ohio State destroy Michigan at the Shoe Nov.20..Giddyup

alexatOSU,

i just finished the gtown smp this past year. to answer your questions, most people at the SMP just want to get into med school period. your best shot at med school after the SMP is gtown and the majority of people go to nymc, drexel, st. louis (not really top tier schools). one of my friends did get into case and the previous year, someone got into penn, but these are definitely the minorities. about 60% end up getting in after the smp year (includes DO and caribbean schools), but the majority do end up going to MD schools.

that said, if you have your heart set on a top tier med school, you probably need to do really well on the mcat (35+) and it might not hurt to do SMP and rock it. hope that helps. good luck.

im doing the GT SMP program now and i agree with doc; doing well in SMP will most likely get you into medical school but you should definitely work to get the mcat to 30+. You should have no problem getting into SMP if u get a 30+. if u want to get into a top 40 school, i would suggest SMP b/c that GPA will hurt you alot(unless u do really well on the mcats and u apply to a non-CA state school which is in the top 40).

with that said, i gotta get back to studying immunology...SMP program is no joke!

PS doc...didnt someone last year get into Columbia?

i didn't hear anything about someone getting into columbia, but i could be wrong. i didn't know that many people in the smp. ask dr. myers...he should know.

don't worry about mim too much. try to get A's in histo and embryo (the two med school classes this semester). i think that will help your app a lot. good luck!

it is true, last year's SMP class did get one person into Columbia, and I believe two people were able to get back to California, with one more turning down a spot at a Cali school.

yeah, i heard one person got into UCI and another to USC....i have my hopes set on USC 🙂

I know some SMPer's from last year and I didn't hear about the person who got into UCI, but I do know of someone who got into UCD, in addition to the USC.

Good luck with USC this year!
