Hello,

I've already been accepted into the class of 2012 at Georgetown's SMP. What exactly is the time-line for getting into medical school eventually. Say I begin and complete the program from 2011 - 2012. Assuming I do well, can I enter the Georgetown Medical School class of 2012 based on my performance in the SMP? Or does a student have to apply in 2012 and matriculate in 2013? Is it different for other medical schools?

Yes, you can apply to GUSOM during the SMP year to be accepted for the immediately following fall. For you, this means that yes, you would be applying for entry Fall 2012. By end of February 2012, you will have finished 5 medical school and several grad courses, and those are the grades that are sent to GUSOM for them to decide whom to interview from the SMP class. After that, you have one more med school course that finishes by mid-March, and that grade is also sent to GUSOM...I'm not sure how much that one sways though. GUSOM interviews for the SMPers will happen late March/early April, and decisions are released mid-May.

Okay to stem from this conversation...I'm applying to post bac and SMP programs right now and have hesitations about the Georgetown SMP because it seems a bit rushed to be applying to medical school while I am just starting the SMP itself.

What are students' experience of applying to medical school the summer before starting the SMP? And on the flip side, how do Georgetown students feel about applying to medical school after COMPLETING the SMP?

i did the SMP 2009-2010. I'm entering med school this fall.

They tell you to get your amcas and as many secondaries as possible before the program starts so that once you start classes, you won't have to worry about those, and I really do recommend you to do that should you chose the GUSMP. Once classes start, unless you're really good self-scheduler, you won't have much time to do secondaries...

They do encourage you to apply during your SMP year, because the program & its staff feel that most students who they take on for the SMP have borderline stats and just need a little boost, which is what the SMP is designed to be. About 50-60% get into med school somewhere (either DO or MD program) during their SMP year and will matriculate the summer after the program ends. then another 15-25% get in to schools the subsequent year. Overall, the claim that 85% of people who finish the SMP will gain med school acceptance within 2 application cycles. (so either the app cycle during the program or the year following).

i agree w/ 1q84 (and you're from my class!)

get them there 2aries done before class starts. I lost a week in MNE (2nd class) filling out 2aries. don't wait for orientation to decide where to app, don't wait for letters from Gtown saying you're enrolled in an smp -->> submit that 2ary early. Everything else you can just email to adcoms later if need be.

Hey 1Q84 & Haplo - Thanks guys! And congrats to 1Q84!! GU's SMP makes so much more sense now knowing their thought process. It does seem odd that medical schools will go out on a limb and accept SMP students without seeing anymore than first semester grades at most. And doesn't that put students at a disadvantage for schools that screen their secondary?

I AM borderline grade-wise, but it would be my third consecutive AMCAS cycle...might need more than a little oomf than just an acceptance into GU SMP and a few grades. I need to be a whole new applicant... right?
