Hey all,

Instead of Tulane's 1 year program (that I am already accepted to and have already moved to New Orleans), I am considering just working this year...not doing the program...(saving up some living money) and doing the Georgetown program next year (in 2006)...starts in August right? Then...if I work my tail off...and apply after the 1st semester...I should be able to get in during that year and matriculate in g'town's med school during 2007 right? So that there is no lag year???

Does BU have the same option?? Isn't this a big advantage that G'town has when one is considering time? I know that the number of people who get in after the first year and transition into medical school is few...but possible right?

While you may be able to get into Georgetown SMP, matriculating into the GU medical school is a completely different matter. You gotta remember that EVERYONE in the class (100-150) is trying to achieve the same thing, but realistically, only 20-30% get in to Georgetown. The other people go to other medical schools, DO schools, carribean schools...etc.

BU's program is similar but they do not actively encourage you to apply during the school year (i.e. there's a lag year). The advantage of going to BU is that you have the option of pursuing a MPH or a MBA during the lag year. In addition, some of the professors that you have during the first academic year are on the admissions committee, so they can vouch for you if you want to apply for the BU medical school.

Though unconfirmed, the general consensus that I get about the support staff (office personnel, advisors...etc) is that people @ GU are much more superior than BU. The support staff at BU has to handle all the other graduate programs (biochem, microbio...etc) and not just the medical masters; so they can only pay so much attention to you. The support staff at Georgetown is only responsible for one program, and has a really good reputation for advocating on your behalf.

If you want to forego the chance of attending the Tulane program, make sure your MCAT score is still valid for 2007 matriculation. Personally, I think you should go ahead and attend the program, and you can go ahead and apply for the Georgetown SMP if you really want to (it'll be a little redundant...but if you want to, why not?) That way, when you apply for medical schools for 2007, they'll get to see your grades from the Tulane program and if you do in fact get into the SMP, they'll be even more inclined to look upon you favorably.

Money is tricky...most of us here are going to be in debt up to our asses...but you gotta look at the long-run here. No one likes being poor but if you can afford to suck it up for a few years, it may just pay off nicely 10-20 years from now.

I'm just curious, what made you change your mind about the Tulane program- I thought you were set to attend? I'm debating Georgetown and Tulane (I would attend in 2 years) but you really can't beat the weight of the Georgetown program (if you do well) with adcoms cuz it really shows you can handle med school. However, the cost of Tulane is attractive and it seems like a good little program with advising that can aid med school applicants. What were your thoughts about the 2?

I am not sure if I am deciding against it quite yet. My stats as I mentioned before are a 3.2 and a 27. I am to talk to the dean tommorow. I am already in New Orleans and I am accepted to the CMB program...I am going to talk to him tommorow and tell him that I am willing to put in 150% effort into getting a 4.0 (while working full time at a job at Tulane Hospital Center) and doing much better on the MCAT and ask him what my chances of getting in would be. I want to become a physician so bad and patience is not one of my virtues. It makes me regret the poor academic performance of my undergrad as I know I will have to wait atleast another 2 years before I get into medical school...oh well.

But as I mentioned, I will talk to him tommorow and I will have the internet set up at my house by Saturday and will try to post information about the program. You will be attending Tulane or Georgetown in 2 years?? What year in college are you and why 2 years? And stats? Thanks a lot. Good luck.

Yeah- 2 years of post bac to do first (must.boost.BCPM.uggh), haven't finished alot of pre-reqs yet and need to take the MCAT.

Be careful. That is no easy feat at all. Sure, it's easy to think to yourself, "oh, i'm gonna work my tail off this year and 4.0 this program..." Actually pulling that off... that's an entirely different story. It's really difficult to get into Georgetown Med as a physio. Like someone said, most of the 150 or so students are vying for spots in the med class. It's perfectly possible that one will have mostly A's in the program and a good med interview and still not get into Georgetown Med (trust me on that one...).
