Hey Tacrum I have already talked to you before by PM about the SMP, you were very helpful a few months ago. I dont need to apply to the SMP, I was already accepted. I actually got accepted two weeks after I applied to it felt kind of good I guess.
As for LOR's, I asked my pre-med aadviser and he said there was nothing bad in them. I know my letter from my PI and an attending I see patients with are very good. I can't be sure but I dont think its my LOR's. I do have a drinking violation from freshman year, 6 years ago which may be playing a small role. As for getting in this year its highly unlikely. The cinci waitlist hasnt moved in three years, NYMC waitlists like 500000 people so who knows where i will be on that list, my interviewer at UNC was a miserable person who never really showed up and I messed up Buffalo and i am sure i am not very high on their WL.

Since I graduated from school in august 2004 I have been taking non-degree seeking graduate level classes, research in rheum, volunteering, etc. This summer I am going to take 4 "post-bacc" classes to raise my gpa even higher so I wont be too bad going into the SMP.

Does anyone know if I take biological psychology in the pscy department, will it count into my BCPM?

I took behavioral neuroscience through the psych department, and will count it as BCPM. It was all neuroscience though...brain anatomy, action potential, that kind of stuff.

Oh, my bad. Glad I was helpful whever that was. Well congrats on the SMP acceptance. I remember how much I liked being accepted to something when mine came, even if it wasn't exactly medical school. 🙂

You know, I have no idea why you haven't been accepted. It sounds like you're a really good applicant to me. Anyways, good luck on the waitlists. I've heard that NYMC takes quite a few off of that, so you never know.

Do you fellas know any SMP-ers who have had any luck at California schools? It seems like most of you guys end up at NYMC, GT, Drexel, etc.

2 of my friends last year ended up in cali...one went to UCI and the other USC...im sure others ended up in cali but those are the ones im sure of...and viz, i got a GT invite again this year but like med, they rejected me post-int whereas i was waitlisted last year...how lame

So do you have to make straight A's in the SMP to be competitive for med school? If a B+ is the top 30% of the med school class, it seems really impressive. Would that be recognized as a good SMP grade by an adcom?

no, only 2-3 people got 4.0 last year...i think...the GPA to shoot for is 3.5+ overall and 3.3+ for med school classes.

i took 2 biopsych classes in undergrad and both went into my BCPM

Well congrats on the acceptance. It's not medical school, but I remember it feeling good to be accepted to something last year. I wonder why schools aren't showing you more love, you seem like a good applicant to me. Who knows with this crazy process?

:luck:

Interviewed at Cinci as OOS and got Waitlisted, interviewed at Buffalo got WL, NYMC = waitlist, interviewed at UNC and havent heard back yet. What % of people get interviews during the SMP year? I thought the website says like 60 % get in during that year, or does most of that come from G-town accepting people in april after physio? The new tuition is 32,000 for next yr I think... I would hope the counselors would do everything they can to get u into medical school. why are grades from the Fall not out until Janaury, I would think they would be available in December after classes are done?

hi bobo, did u ever call up the schools for FB on why u were waitlisted/rejected cuz it seems your numbers were good enough to get you the interviews...so maybe it was a problem with the interview (no offense) and if so, then the SMP won't really help you there and it won't increase your UG GPA either.

Wh ycan't I see alchemist's post. Alchemist..post it again...

can anyone tell me if the undergrad and postbacc gpas that are considered
for admittance to smps follow the amcas format or just a basic cumulative
gpa, which in some cases, include classes that are retaken in order to
replace bad grades? thanx a bunch in advance! 😀

I have a question. So I was recently accepted into the SMP and kind of hesistant about it. I have applied twice with a 3.5 from a top school and a 31 MCAT but havent gotten in anywhere. I was wondering for the people who did the SMP last year, why do you think you did not get in during the SMP? What were your stats before the SMP and did you get any interviews while in it. There is no way I would do the SMP and then apply again after I think because that means I would have to retake the MCAT as it would expire and by then it would be my fourth time applying - no thanks to that. So I was wondering how you did in the SMP and why you didnt get in during it. What can you do to up your chances of getting in somewhere while in the program?

Thanks.

i'll go ahead and add my input too. i applied the year before smp and had three interviews, two being at very competitive schools - columbia and case western. i was waitlisted at all 3 schools and, obviously didn't get in. i went to a prestigious undergrad school and has a comfortable mcat score. i had great research credentials and i was part of a very small and tight-knit department, so i had several very personal letters of rec. i had some clear-cut problems though - some of my science grades were not great and my clinical experience was shoddy at best. i think my overall profile got me the interviews but then the interviews were the death of me. i'm good at conversation, but, at that time, i just didn't know enough about what i was getting into --> door slammed shut on year 1. (i was told this by admiss deans from 2 of those 3 schools).

as for the smp year, i think of myself as kind of an anomaly, because even though i pretty much had a 3.5+ at all times during the program, i still wasn't invited to interview at the "givens" (if you will) - nymc, gw, drexel, slu, etc. i managed to pull an interview at case western's cleveland clinic program and i had a very late interview at suny downstate. it was hard for me because these two schools didn't seem to know very much at all about the smp program. i was waitlisted at cleveland and rejected at downstate (horrid interview, woops). i interviewed at georgetown too, and they strung me along till the very end, but i never made it off the competitive applicant list. anyway, what killed me last year, i think, was that a) i mysteriously didn't get interviews at nymc, gw, etc and b) that i interviewed late at schools that weren't familiar with smp.

this year (3rd time). i think this is the year when i can finally say my app has improved substantially. finished smp with just about an A- average, volunteered in an ER for a few months while a physio, and now i work full-time in a hospital with a ton of responsibilty for patients' care. it's paid off - i've had interviews at 6 schools - gw, georgetown, drexel, new york medical college, suny upstate, and rosalind franklin. waitlisted at gw and drexel and rejected at georgetown (we won't discuss this now!), but still waiting for the other 3 as they were pretty recent. so, in retrospect, i wish i had just not applied last year. but, at the same time, had i gotten in somewhere, i would have had opposite feelings!

for one thing, interviewing at a school that is familiar with smp (i.e. nymc) has been DRASTICALLY different than interviewing at schools that aren't as familiar with it. for you current or future physios, i'll definitely advise you to think of a really good (and sincere!) spiel about how the physio program has changed your application. it has the potential to become your unique selling point, especially (from my experience) at drexel, gw, and nymc.

one other thing, if you don't have acceptances by the time neuroscience rolls around (or if you're applying the next year), DEFINITELY shoot for the A in that class. i've had more than one interviewer this year comment on how that is such a strong indicator. i figured physiology would be the most crucial course (it def. is at georgetown, at least), but i got the opposite impression this year. so, don't lose steam in may!! it'll be tough - you'll be grappling with the 3-D representations of the limbic system while your med student lab partners will be content rolling the brain around a few times, pointing at the cerebellum and then leaving early to plan their summer vacations. you'll want to throw in the towel, but - trust me - don't!

anyway, that's my old-man sage advice. good luck guys. as always, i'm happy to entertain pms, etc. 👍

How did you get both of these? If I attend the SMP I will want to volunteer in an ER on Saturday mornings or something like that, and I probably won't apply during the SMP year so I want a clinical job for that off year.
I guess my question is, how many volunteer hours were you able to put in and how much did it interfere with your academic performance? Also, the clinical job: How? What? Where? Why? When?
Thanks.

Does the SMP send a notice of completion to you once all your materials are in? How long after you're complete should you expect a response of interview or rejection?

There is no interview. I was complete and then less than 2 weeks later got accepted. I didnt know I was complete b/c the graduate statys page never said anything received, so I called Mrs. Cabbiness and she told me I was good to go along with the fact that I had a funny name.

Alchemist - that may or may not have been the post, it was a long time ago. Anyway I dont think it was the interview. I got rejected pre-secondary from many schools like Drexel which I expected an interview. As for the interviews...

NYMC - good interview but at the end she told me that on campus binge drinking was a huge problem there. I have a drinking violation from freshman yr (6yrs ago) on my application. It was minor and hardly noteworthy...I got caught with a beer... for shame! Anyway I was ticked off that it mattered to her but I just said well i am much more mature since then and learned my lesson which may benefit me because when I get to Medical School I wouldnt make the same mistake the others will. she seemed pleased with the answer but I got WL. I think if she didnt like the answer it would have been rejection and since NYMC's WL moves alot I am not giving up hope there.

U of cinci - I am OOS so I am not sure how I got the interview but either way it went amazing. I wouldnt have changed a thing I said or anything. Yet I still got WL. Makes me mad because if I had a perfect interview (even told so by the lady I interview with - she even went so far to say that If I choose to come to cinci to come and visit her as she enjoyed talking to me so much) I had no chance to get in. there WL doesnt move so I am out of luck there. The only good news is if you get on the high end of the WL this year then next yr they usually show u some love. I loved cinci more than any other school.

UB - Ok you got me alchemist..bad interview, my fault, let my guard down with my student interviewer. Still got WL so couldnt have been that bad.

UNC -no comment. Maybe if my interviewer showed up then I would have had a chance.

UCI boy - UCI grad, 28 or 29 mcat, 3.75 UG GPA, didnt get invited to UCI first time around, dont know the rest

i think i applied to about 12 schools the first time around?? it's funny because case and columbia were the two "reach" schools i chose. i did also have an interview at nymc that year as well, but it ended in waitlist. i really can't explain it, just strange luck, i guess.

anyway, i had a lot better luck with schools this year - 7 interviews and i just got into nymc and rosalind franklin in the same week and i also got onto the high priority waitlist at suny upstate which gives me a good chance at getting in come may 15.

yeah, i dunno what gets ppl into med schools. i've seen ppl with low mcats but high UG gpas getting in; hardly anyone getting in the other way, high mcat low UG gpas. and why does the UG gpa matter so much if you have other gpas after it? who knows. your numbers seemed fine to me so i had just wondered if it was sth else (interview, LOR, ECs are the obvious choices)...but i guess its just a crapshoot.

did you ever tell UNC that your interviewer didn't show up? i would think they would reschedule you with someone else. that really sucked. and that drinking thing from 6 ago, that sux that it came back up. guess the adcom ppl are like elephants, never forget anything. i wish they'd forget my UG gpa cuz that was almost a decade ago cuz everything else is fine, but no luck for me either. well, i hope you get off those waitlists sometime. i'm rooting 4 u.

thanks buddy, hopefully you will make it into the SMP and we will be classmates next yr. Well my UNC interview did show up eventually, 3 hours later, but she didnt ask me anything. The interview was 15 minutes, would have been 5 if I didnt start asking her about herself...
This process is so wack, I am making a vow to myself that if I ever get to become a MD I will never be like most of the people I have interview with.....

so i'll make my yearly informative notice to californian applicants in the SMP; i finished the program in 2003; and my year, just like years past and years after me...almost half the class was from CA

they even jokingly refer to gtown as UCGeorgetown

someone my year asked the directors of the program what the deal was w/ california schools; they keep saying they're "working on ties" w/ CA schools

the SMP program is well known on the east coast at schools like NYMC, drexel; so if you don't mind going there then do the SMP. if you really want to be in CA...then thinking SMP will boost your chances of getting in to a CA school is really a false hope...

The SMP is great for people with good MCATs but low gpas; and really only a few get into uci/usc/uc davis; they probably would have gotten in w/o the program

in hindsight, the gtown program taught me more in one year than 4 years of undergrad at ucla, the program is what you make of it; and if you're from CA just don't expect tons of interview invites from UCs to come rolling in; some UC schools don't even recognize the program until after you get your MS; in the end you get an MS degree in one year; and I worked the year after i finished the program, and the MS degree helps land you a good job during your year off

i ultimately ended up in DO school in CA; if you got any qs lemme know! i never really knew what DOs were until i went to gtown when one of the profs there (who was a DO) gave us a presentation on what osteopathic medicine is. for me staying in CA meant rotating at hospitals in CA and making connections here so landing a residency out here may be a bit easier than rotating out in the east coast

thanks. i hope i either make it into the SMP or drexel IMS. or med school. i have one WL at UMDNJ-SOM and an interview at drexel on tues and one at western/comp in april. anywhere...would be fine. at least one accept somewhere would bring a smile to my face. otherwise i'll just have to reapply on june 1st. though i won't have the aug mcat holding my file up this year. so pretty much it'll just be writing a new PS and getting a couple of recs from my physio and maybe micro (in the summer) profs. otherwise, there really isn't much else i can change, except to apply early this time and those 2 new recs like i said. hopefully, u'll get into NYMC

hey, thanx for the info. i got a question, how hard did you have to work compared to ucla? i know that it depends on a lot of factors and is different for people, but would same amount of effort get you similar grades?

At Georgetown the average student needs to study 5 hours a day (including weekends) on non test weeks. I dont know how that compares to UCLA but I know I spend more time studying this year then I did any of my undergrad years at Notre Dame.

so i'll make my yearly informative notice to californian applicants in the SMP; i finished the program in 2003; and my year, just like years past and years after me...almost half the class was from CA

they even jokingly refer to gtown as UCGeorgetown

someone my year asked the directors of the program what the deal was w/ california schools; they keep saying they're "working on ties" w/ CA schools

the SMP program is well known on the east coast at schools like NYMC, drexel; so if you don't mind going there then do the SMP. if you really want to be in CA...then thinking SMP will boost your chances of getting in to a CA school is really a false hope...

Thanks! I heard that UC's dont recognize grad programs which are in progress, but USC does. On the other hand it's not clear if it values smp program or not? The poster above said that his friend got into USC after smp with a ugrad gpa of 3.1, so it seems like they recognized smp gpa.. On the other hand, another poster above gave examples where the well connected schools like NYMC and Drexel gave him a lot of trouble.

a few people got interviews to USC but i think just one person got admitted my year; its a little more accepting than the UCs are; but def not as accepting as schools like NYMC, drexel, etc

i didn't really work too hard at ucla, that's why my gpa suffered and that's why i did the gtown program; you've got to work hard but its very easy to burn out; just push through, be diligent and you'll see success in all your efforts

I know this is the California school thread, but I was wondering if anybody in the SMP has ever gotten into the University of Washington as a resident? Or I guess period.

BTW, my two weeks for waiting is up, where's my acceptance?

^Its not an acceptance (yet hopefully) but I know someone who interviewed at Washington this year in the program.

Hey, as long as we're asking the do-you-know-anyone-that-got-into-this-school questions... uhm, do you know anyone that got into the University of Minnesota (twin cities)? From what they've posted I see one person has been accepted from the SMP over the three years they show on the accepted students page. Undoubtedly it has a lot to do with who applies where and all that jazz - and MN is prolly not really high up on a lot of non Midwesterners' lists and may not garner tons of SMP apps - but ya know... help a Gopher out.

P.S. Gophers > BADgers re: NCAA hockey (this past weekend not withstanding) 😉

As a Wisconsinite I would normally feel the need to argue with you about you last statement, but seeing as that school has rejected me twice now Im not going to and instead just add that the Green Bay Packers>The Love Boat Vikings 😉

The only person I know form MN is still waiting to hear back from the school (and I cant remember if she had an interview or not yet) but is allready into a DO school and wants to go to that school so shes not waiting on pins and needles.
