I only recently learned about the Special Master's Program at Georgetown and am really considering it. I am a junior right now and my grades aren't stellar (~3.0 science, ~3.2 overall) Has anyone done this or know much about it? It sounds better than doing a post bacc program where your undergrad GPA is just raised because you actually get to take med school classes. I also think it looks good on applications. Opinions?
Also..if i do raise my GPA and still apply next year to med schools, it would make sense to apply to the SMP too as a backup plan, right?

There are several threads in this forum about the SMP already. Just do a search for them. You could also check out the SMP website at: http://smp.georgetown.edu/

yeah..ive been to the site and i read some of the threads on here but they were old i guess..i just wanted to hear from people currently in the program or who had finished it. thanks.

As to your first question, absoultly apply next year to medical schools (in June) and if you arent in by January, apply to the SMP as a backup. I was on a waitlist all summer, and the only thing that kept me somewhat positive is that I had a spot in the SMP class this year.

So, for you two in this program, what do you think about it? How hard is it? How much support for your AMCAS application does GT give you? Do they have people who will go over your personal statement and essays with you, I guess my question is, what level of help do you get? How hard is it to get accepted to the SMP? (my profile is under the 'I' in my signature. I'm told the other link upsets people.)
I'm giving it until the end of this month, if I don't hear anything from any med schools I'll definitely consider applying to this program or to RFU's. Along those lines, did either of you apply to RFU's program? What other schools did you consider? What swayed you to GT?

How hard is it?

Its challengeing, not difficult, but not a walk in the park. TPTB suggest 5 hours of studying a day, and that is (after only a semister) about right on non test weeks. You need to devote this year to this program, but you meet a lot of good people, and the material covered is facinating (if it isnt you probably shouldnt be a doc).

How much support for your AMCAS application does GT give you?

Other then tell you to complete it before you start the SMP, not much. However, we have a class devoted to getting into/choosing the medical school for you called Pathways 1st semister that helps you from secondarys onward.


How hard is it to get accepted to the SMP?

You have better numbers then me.

What other schools did you consider? What swayed you to GT?

I was told it was the best program out there from numerous sources so I applied over Christmas break last year, got in by Feb and never considered another program.
