Getting shot or blown up by the enemy should scare you more than basic training.
You should totally do it DC. They'll finance your medical school education and give you extra spending money so that you can take your lil sister out. Then you do your residency and serve your 3 years or whatever taking care of military personnel. I don't think they'll ship you out to iraq...most likely a military base.
If you are German, then things get complicated.
If not, there are commitments after medical school, depending on the length of support you get during medical school from the US government.
You won't go through basic with the enlisted recruits, but an abbreviated course for Officers.
You will be assigned to many places, possibly Iraq, but far from the front lines in every instance. Doesn't mean you may not get killed in a random mortar attack.
There are many resources available from your local health care recruiter, and the guys in the military residency forum are knowledgable as well.
