Hey all,

I did some searching on SDN, but all the threads I found were outdated... and well, I'm in a state of semi-panic.
I just received my 3rd quarter biochem grade back, and man, I got a C+ (2.3). Despite working hard, this quarter was just... the material frankly sucked (focused mainly on lab techniques rather than biological aspects. I hate lab), and one of the professors was one of the worst I've ever had.

This is my first ever C. Everything I've had before (all the pre-reqs) were in the B or A range. I scored a A and a B in biochem 1 and 2.

I've read that adcoms don't look at individual grades, but this is biochem... doesn't it serve as some kind of barometer for how well you'll do in dental school? Since you have to take it again...

Majoring in biochem (ironically). Also took microbio and biochem lab and got an A- and B+ (and Korean as well, don't know the grade yet, but it's definitely in the A range).

Don't plan on applying until next year. My GPA, as of now, is probably a 3.65+. Don't know my sGPA. My extracurriculars are somewhat lacking, but I have a whole year to build it up (although I have done a few unique things).

You should be fine, assuming your DAT scores are moderately strong (don't need to be super high) and that you continue to get As and Bs in the rest of your classes. Biochem courses can be highly unorganized and more of a chop shop (get em in, get em out). I know how you feel. The best thing to do with a bad grade is not do it again, and even make up for it by doing well in the following classes (especially if its a sequence or similar in some way). Trust me, you're fine.

I haven't taken the DAT yet as I'm applying next cycle, but I definitely hope that I can do well. My main goal is to score 21+ in all the sections (hopefully better. 😛)

But thank you so much for your reply... one step towards feeling better! 🙂

I know its stressful, but I don't think its that big of a deal. I researched the topic too when I thought I was at risk of getting a C+ in Gen Chem 2, even though I ended up avoiding it. You have a fairly strong GPA and if you do well on your DAT I don't really see how a single C+ would hold you back.

It is acceptable to have a few Cs here and there, but just make sure that there aren't too many. Since questions about why you got a certain grade in a certain class may conceivably come up, your attitude about your grades is also important.

Everyone have their ups and downs. They know that dental school is very hard, some other classes that dental school expects are virology, immunology, anatomy and physiology, biochem, and microbio. These classes are known to be very hard, and quite frankly, last time i checked. Getting a C+ in biochem is great if you are in dental school. As long as you pass right? hahaha

I'm not in dental school... Gosh, I wish I was. 😛
