i have been researching the md/phd route and i was wondering if having the dual degree (as opposed to only the phd) would make it easier to get your own lab after completing all of your schooling? also i heard that it helps when applying for grants? thanks for the input

There have been a few articles in the literature that have tried to investigate this kind of thing. As I recall, the conclusion seems to be that dual degree holders do just as well as (though not necessarily better than) those with just PhDs when it comes to getting grants. I, personally, doubt that being an MD PhD makes it easier to get your own lab (compared to having a PhD only). The people who successfully start their own labs are those who have had good training, regardless of the route.

And good connections. Someone senior helping you out.
