I’m a junior and I was planning on taking a gap year and then applying in 2021. But recently my thoughts about a lot of things have changed and I’m considering getting a Masters in Medical Sociology.

I’m taking a sociology class for the first time this semester and I’ve really loved it and have been thinking of ways to combine it with medicine. Getting a masters in medical sociology sounds like a good option right now. I have some time, so I’m not too worried. But it feels kind of impulsive to want to make such a big change because of one class.

What do you guys think? Does this sound like it would be helpful for a med school app or is this just a bad impulsive decision?

I think it could definitely be an interesting experience! But I would assess the rest of your app first and see if there’s any gaps you can fill in your app, like clinical volunteering or research etc! Many schools also offer medical humanities/ethics dual degree programs

I have my other EC’s in line because my original plan was to apply summer 2020. Would that provide enough leeway? And unfortunately it’s too late to even minor in sociology, I have too many credits completed.

There's nothing wrong with spending a gap year pursuing a passion. Adcoms will want to know about this masters, so you should be able to talk about why you are doing it and how it will apply to your career as a physician. As long as you are able to answer these questions, then it will not hurt you.

The only question is if you think this will be worth one less year as a physician, which none of us will be able to answer for you.

Do it because you're interested in it.

It won't add anything to your app.
