Hello everyone,

I'm very interested in international health and international law. My goal is to combine medical care with human rights in socioeconomically conflicted regions, something that could be facilitated by a thorough understanding of international relations and law, especially through channels like the UN.

For this purpose, I am considering a MD/JD should I get accepted into a med school this cycle. What have people done with a MD/JD? Is it a useless extra 3 years of education?

often an MD/JD is needed to be a medical examiner/coroner. I only know this because of this:

Love her.

you could sue yourself for malpractice

Actually from what you said it sounds like it would be a useless 7 years of education. If you want to work in human rights and international law then get a law degree.

I agree: MD/JD is generally only useful to be a medical examiner/coroner. All that other synergistic stuff you think makes sense (malpractice law, expert witness, international law, etc) really only requires you to be either just a lawyer or just a doctor.

Me too!!!! I've always wanted to work for the UN. If you're really passionate about it then go for it, it won't be useless

I know Yale offers a joint MD/JD program! I would definately do a MD/JD program if my school offered it!

This does not sound like a well considered decision to me. Your idea of what you want/can do with this degree combination sounds nebulous at best to me. My advice would be to seek out someone with this combination and ask them about their experience and why they think it is valuable. My sense is that you may not have explored thoroughly exactly what human rights legal work entails.

Your post sounds a bit uninformed to be honest, but that may be because you didn't feel like elaborating on your reasons for wanting this degree combo and your understanding of what advantages it may provide you. Perhaps you should have provided more of that information.

My wife's OBGYN is an MD/JD. He has a little poster up in the waiting room stating he takes certain cases, although I am not certain what those cases might be and I am really uncertain how often he actually pursues anything in the legal world. I would post his info but, obviously, I'm not in a position to do so without speaking to him first.

Have you considered a JD/MPH? Might be a better combo with far less school and other training, ie residency, not to mention that it sounds better suited to your interests.

What does this mean? What would you actually be doing?

Your interviewers are going to ask.
