I posted this in another thread as well, but I was actually wondering what the chances are getting in after 3 years. I wrote my OAT last saturday and I had 350AA and a 350TS, my GPA is farily Competive from what I can see, but Im not sure if applying early means that you have to have an above average GPA?

Has anyone gotten in early and can offer some advice. I would really like to try to either ICO or UMSL.

I don't understand what you mean? Are you saying that you have applied for the past 3 years?

No I mean, I havent got im degree yet. So I only have right now, 2 years of Univeristy Completed. I was wondering if I applied this year, what would my chances be of getting in without a degree in 2006.

I got in after 2 yrs and a bit....so it's possible.

Canadian26,

Your chances of getting in are very good, especially if you apply early. I applied during my third year of undergrad to ICO very late in the cycle (Febuary), had 330AA, 360TS, and ~3.7-3.8 GPA and was successful. So as long as you have all the other requirements in place you should have no problem.

did you apply to UW? because if you didn't get in with that GPA, that's insane!

Some people with a GPA that good don't get in. My friend applied last year with a 3.7 GPA and a 360 AA and did not get in. Put it this way...most Canadians would rather go to Waterloo because it is soooo much cheaper than going to the States...which makes it a lot more competitive since it is the only english optometric school in the country...

I applied to UW this year (my first time) and was rejected. To be honest, I'm glad I didn't have the financial obligation of attending UW. Good school, just not really where I want to be anymore.

Dont' know if you need above average stats but it certainly helps. I had a 360 overall with a 390TS and got early acceptences to NEWENCO and ICO. The question is, why do you want to get in early? Why not finish your undergrad and get that hard-earned degree? If you had only done two years I would say go for it (if they even accept after two years) but with 3 under your belt, just finish one more, get your degree and then matriculate. For the most part, there really is no rush.

I was actually going to apply after I got my degree, but my parents (mostly my dad) and some of my friends are pressuring me to apply for acceptance next year. I bet in 2 more years my GPA will be higher, and thus increasing my chances even more... but I thought maybe juss apply and see what happens.

I got accepted after three years. It saves you one year of tuition and it gives you an extra year of earning power.

With your stats, you are almost a lock for most American schools, especially the private ones. As for the $$ issue, isn't walking down the stage and receiving your degree with your loved ones watching worth so much more than a year's pay?

I kinda agree with you, but they're the ones that want me to go I actually wanna stay lol. I think I'll just apply at like one or two schools and see what happen, I would personally much rather wait a year.

I personally would wait. What if you get into optometry school, and after your first year, decide its not for you? You will be in MUCH better shape if you have a 4 year degree, rather than having just 2-3 years under your belt. Plus, if I had the chance to go back to undergrad, I would take it in a SECOND! Enjoy your time....you have plenty of of time to earn money.

I don't think any school will accept someone without 3 years of undergrad. When I applied I thought I saw that as a requirement.

I also got in after 3 years, and thus far, do not regret it at all. One thing that you may want to look into would be completing your bachelors degree while in optometry school. I'm not sure if many other universities allow this, but I know that they do at UM-St. Louis. Basically you complete all the required classes, and then you fill your electives credits through your optometric education. This is what I am going to be doing. This way, I can start a year earlier and also still receive my bachelors degree while completing my 4 years of optometry school. It might be something that you may want to look into. I would follow your gut. If you don't want to start optometry school early, then don't. I had several people tell me not to rush things, but this was my personal choice. I really wanted to get in after 3 years because I didn't really have an interest in anything else besides being an optometrist. Hope this helps! If you have any questions about UMSL, feel free to PM.

GPA: 3.98
OAT:350 AA, 360 TS

NEWENCO has a BS in Visual Science that you can obtain provided you meet the necessary course requirements. Fall short and you need to take extra courses outside the college to make up for the missing credits (I took my remaining courses at a community college). It can be done, but it's pretty tough when you have a full optometric course load. Still, it would've been so much nicer to have my ugrad degree from my original institution.
