Asked the MPH forum but they said it would be best to ask here.

If I want to do global epidemiology work for ID, should i try to do the MPH in medical school or just wait for a global health residency? Or both?

Thanks.

Where are these global health residencies?

I basically want to be involved with international public health and I am pretty set on doing this within the frame of infectious disease (though I do accept that interests change in med school...)

An MPH tends to make more sense after one has already acquired some experience in their discipline of choice. Nevertheless, this degree is offered at many medical schools as a component of the MD (in four years) and is a legitimate reason to graduate in five.

Assuming I make it into medical school, what are ways I can get said experience? Sort of lost on how I can do that while enrolled.

The main requirement seems to be admission to the medical school (and interest in the field).
The programs you cited appear to be electives for medical students, not residencies in the usual sense. One would be a candidate for them from any medical school.

Thanks. It seems from what I read from other students that it led to a "global/international residency". Just confused on which path would be best to take/how to get info.
Glad to get some clarity from you!

The programs you are considering are for enrolled medical students. There are no residencies in Global Health that are recognized for licensure. It is confusing that they have chosen to name them this way.
With or without an MPH, you would be able to apply for an internal medicine residency and then an ID fellowship.
You can do an MPH at any point along this path, though I do not recommend the interval between medical school and residency.

@Lost In Transcription -- totally on the same page as you. I'd like to do work in ID in the future as it pertains to global health. This is interesting.
