I've read the doom threads before about entering the profession but hearing it over and over again from the pharmacists at the hospital pharmacy I volunteer at is no fun. I've started taking the pre-reqs, have lots of volunteers hours and my bachelors but being 23 I'm starting to worry this path might be a mistake. I want this more than anything but 7 years down the road when I graduate from pharm school in debt with possibly no job and 30 years old I'm sure that won't be fun either. I guess I'm just looking for some encouragement or something like that haha.

Chose pharmacy because its what you want to do. You don't want to be 65 years old and regret your career choice because what others have said.

Yes the job market will be tight in the coming years, but everything is cyclical. People on this site would lead you to believe that pharmacists will be replaced by robots and we'll all be forced to work at McDonalds.

Keep your chin up and look past that. Life isn't easy, but it's easier to deal with when you make choices that makes you happy.

Thanks! Good to hear something like that.

Most doom and gloom discussions you hear of are either from people that had no idea what being a pharmacist is like and hate their jobs, became a pharmacist for the money, or a troll. Although some things they say is true to an extent, I would take it with a grain of salt.

Companies would not be paying pharmacists the salaries that they earn and pharmacy would not be a profession if pharmacy does not play a pivotal role in healthcare.

That said -- do something because you want to do it and believe that it will bring you happiness in return. Life is definitely too short to think of "what if's." Just do the best you can and enjoy the journey -- there will always be positions available if you are willing to work for it. 🙂

You can always think of it this - if those pharmacists and others tell you the job market is bad then you might not pursue that career but in reality it may just be their way of keeping their job outlook good by keeping you out.

It's not always so. Even some faculty say the market doesn't look good.

Your only 23, Im 29 and graduated in 2005 with a business degree. I worked in a pharmacy during college all the while feeling thats what I really wanted to do but being young and a couple years into my degree I felt that there was no turning back. After working for 5 years at a great company, I finally decided to take action and do what I really wanted. Getting a second undergrad in BIO now and then on to Pharm school. Just wish I had done it earlier!
