Anyone know if there is a train or something that goes from Grand Central to Baltimore? or is flying the only way to get to Maryland in a timely manner? (I know traffic is supposed to be crazy around DC)

Amtrak goes to Baltimore, but it leaves from Penn Station, not Grand Central. I'm not totally sure if the Acela Express--the super-fast version of the train that skips many stops and gets you down there in a couple of hours--stops at Baltimore, but I think it does. If so, DEFINITELY take that. No airport hassles/underwear inspections/endless delays, and you actually get nice clean train cars to sit in with LEGROOM. (Even nicer if you spring for the business class car, but coach is fine too.)

Thanks I just looked all that up on Amtrak.com. Indeed the Acela Express goes to Baltimore, but from CT it's $186 each way! (compared to $68 each way for normal train).

So I may be stuck with ol' Bessy in second class.

Thanks for the info.

I didn't know it was so expensive.😳 I worked in business for a long time, and my company always bought the tickets. (It's still cheaper than the shuttle, which costs over $400 round trip.)

taken from this website:

New York(88 E Broadway) <--> Baltimore(O'Donnell St.)

That's just an example of their schedule...there are a bunch of times for that route so take your pick. also check out

These are the chinatown routes you may or may not have heard of. I used to use the northbound bus and i had good experiences with it. Everyone I know thought they were reliable.

edit: whoops you said train in your original post. just thought i'd throw this out there anyway.

so is grey hound out of the question? it's pretty cheap and some routes are pretty quick depending on when u leave new york. also hopkins is about an hr or more north of dc (depending on the traffic) so dont worry about dc traffic.

Yeah, Baltimore has its own terrible traffic to worry about

If you end up going with greyhound (which is really the cheapest thing to do), just try to avoid anything that would get you into Baltimore around rush hour (4:30-6:30ish). Baltimore traffic has a tendency to sit, so you would run the risk of arriving in Baltimore on time, but taking 45 minutes just to move a few miles through downtown. Like someone else said, there are a TON of greyhound times to choose from, all for about $20. They generally leave from Port Authority in NYC, and you could take the bus to the downtown Baltimore station or to the Travel Plaza Station (short cab ride into the city).

i know the chinatown bus goes to washington DC for $20 round trip of $15 one way i believe.. i dont know how far away hopkins is from DC tho..

Not to sound like a nervous nelly here, but I'd be careful of those Chinatown buses. None of them are operated by bus companies you ever heard of, and they're notorious for poor/nonexistent maintenance. There have even been a couple of really bad accidents with these buses. (I remember one a few years ago--I think it was a bus headed to Atlantic City. The wheel came right off the bus on the Garden State Parkway. There were some very serious injuries in that one.)

I know Amtrak costs more, but you'd get there in one piece, and you won't have to worry about sitting across from ex-cons or psychos (remember that guy in Canada recently?). You might as well arrive for your interview in a nice, calm frame of mind.

Just a thought.

It is NOT worth it to go from NYC to DC and then commute to Baltimore. This will take upwards of an hour in a personal car, and much longer in either a taxi or a bus (plus, who really wants to pay that much for a taxi?).

i have taken the fung wah bus very very often, mostly for ballroom competitions, and will be taking it to Tufts for my interview in a couple of weeks. Also, in all of their accidents, no one was hurt:

Don't be too afraid of the chinatown buses guys.

haha well for $15 one way instead of like $45 or whatever it is for greyhound, its not bad. also the chinatown bus lets you off in chinatown in boston which i sreally quite close to tufts

I'm an old lady now, so I don't have to live dangerously any more. I get to ride the train with the high rollers.🙂

I'm in Baltimore, and it's actually quite easy to take a MARC commuter train (weekdays only, $7) from Union Station in DC to Penn Station in Baltimore. The trip takes about an hour and is much easier and very hassle-free compared to driving. Penn Station has a great Hopkins shuttle that's free, runs from morning till night, and will get you to the med school in less than fifteen minutes.

Hope that helps!
