I'm a nontraditional student with some prior misdemeanor convictions of underage dui and poss. of marijuana (10 years ago) and two citations of public intox. No problems in six years and have worked as an ED nurse for five years. gpa honors 3.7 (3.2 when you count the previous nursing credits) and 32 mcat. My last five years are stellar but I'm afraid my troubles as a youth are going to hurt me. I wanted to see what some of you thought. thanks.

While I think that your charges are nothing "big," I think the repeated "intoxication" charges may make it seem like you have a drinking problem. I don't know how likely it is for ADCOMS to extend an interview, but if they do, you have to have some way of you're not a drunk. Considering how many medical doctors end up becoming alcoholics, I would guess they might get concerned.

Also, at 3.2 your GPA is less than stellar. Important is that you have turned things around with a 3.7 in your new work, and that's a very good start.

EDiT: Are the citations criminal in nature? As in, must you disclose them as a misdemeanor or felony? If not, don't worry about it. The DUI and pot is bad. If the charges were product of 1 event, your chances at med school sound more favorable.

You should look into the possibility of getting them expunged.

Sending a PM about my experiences with it 🙂

If you are sober and in recovery, then this is a special life experience that will give you insight into the disease of addiction. This chronic and fatal illness is often poorly understood by medical professionals and places you in a unique situation to be of service to others as a physician. I know a few physicians in recovery (ie: AA) and they are superb physicians and human beings

Applicants with this sort of record get interviewed all the time so it is not a deal breaker. Some youngsters would like to the the public hanging of all alcohol-related offenders but adcoms tend to be more merciful.
