I was wondering if the fact that I have an OWI, and 2 MIP's, would effect my getting into dental school? I won't be applying until next year, but this is really bothering me and was wondering if anyone could answer that question for me. The OWI was in high school, year '04, and the two MIP's have been fairly recent. My grades are pretty decent, and I haven't taken the DAT yet. Thanks a lot.

MIP: Minor in possession (of alcohol)


OP, to be frank, I don't think it would look too good. Even with stellar stats, 3 alcohol related incidents in the last 2 years reeks of immaturity and irresponsibility and I think many schools would find that hard to look past.

Another acronym for drunk driving is OWI, or operating while intoxicated. MIP is an acronym for Minor In Possesion of Alcohol.

I don't recall filling out my criminal history when I applied last year. How will the schools know?

The AADSAS application has a section on it I think

You're right...I just checked my AADSAS application and it doesn't ask. I got it mixed up with the Air Force HPSP application which does ask for criminal record. The OP could very well keep this a secret from the ADCOMs.

Regardless, some, if not all schools, require a criminal background check for matriculating students. If negative information is discovered, they reserve the right to refuse acceptance, especially if the infractions could prohibit gaining a license in the future. Why admit a student who could not practice later? Not sure if DUI/OWI is an eliminating factor. I'd fight damn hard to get those stricken from my record.

ask for community service in exchange for dropping the two MIP's..then you can put you did community service..ha...plead your case of getting into dental school and see what happens....hmm..i don't think this will work...good luck
