so i am currently a junior in h.s and really interested in a career in densistry, my bro will be attending UMDNJ next year from Ramapo with the 7 year program. I currently have a 3.97 GPA weighted, but this year i have like a 4.6 which will hopefully raise my GPA alot, and my h.s rank is only top 20% right now. My SAT, which i just got back from May is a 1360 with a 760 in Math and a 600 in redaing, taking it again in june and hopefully can break 1400.

So do you guys think that i might be able to get into any 7 year dental schools with these stats, or do i have to do the normal route and try to get beast grades and DAT scores in college? i was looking at Marquettes and they only require top 25% and a 1200 on SAT, so that seems much easier than UMDNJ's 1350 and top 10%. only prob is i live in NJ, so i dont know if i would go to wisconsin for school, so if you guys think it is a possibility i have a chance to get into a 7 year school, can you recommend some near NJ. thanks a lot.

I don't know a lot about the seven year programs to be honest but here is a little food for thought. If you go into undergrad focused it is very doable to finish in 4 years. Dental school is only another 4 after that for a total of 8. This is only an extra year which really isn't that big of a deal in the long run. Also it took me about a year of undergrad to be certain that dentistry is what I wanted to do. If you start a 7 year track and decide a year or two in that dentistry is not for you where will you be? I am not trying to talk you out of a seven year program because there are some great advantages but just make sure it is what you want to do.

Graduate undergrad in 3 years. Very doable with correct planning.

thats not what i am asking though, i am asking do you think i can get into one of the 7 year programs with my stats

That would be better answered by folks who roam around the pre-dental forum.

Would not recommend 7 year programs. I did one back when they first started and I took a lot of science and math, had a heavy schedule, and missed out on a lot of coll ege life. Finished in 7 years, and like being a dentist, but there is more to life and you will summarily leave behind some of the fun things you can do in college (junior year abroad for instance). I would select a college that has a good pre dent cirriculum and some college life activities (football, basketball for instance). Most people only get to go through college once, make the most of it. If you are as smart as you say, you should have no trouble getting into dental school.

Next year will be my first year at Buffalo's 7 year dental program. Honestly, i think these programs are awesome. Save a boatload of money and be guaranteed acceptance to dental school. I'm not sure how it is for the new jersey schools, but these programs are typically fiercely competitive. I would say you def need to increase your SAT to at least above 1400. Besides that, EC's will do you well. Good luck
